Default Back to the hobby after many Years (Question)

I just recently started collecting again after many years of not collecting. Can someone explain to me why the value on Beckett is so different than what cards actually sell for (Ebay, shows etc.)
Why is Beckett not using actual selling value?
Again sorry if this is a dumb question. thanks

Price guides(monthly or otherwise) have become completely irrelevant in the modern era. Too many sales, too many platforms, too many cards to be anywhere near accurate. It would take a huge staff of humans and bots constantly monitoring sales everywhere to be able to be even vaguely comprehensive.

1. Beckett is outdated and refuses to adapt to the times. They operate like it's still the late 90's.

2. Not exactly sure what you are asking but pretty much anything will sell on ebay but if you want the highest amount of return it's PSA 10 or nothing. That's just what the collecting community decided but SGC and CGC if you ask me continue to close the gap but it's very slow.

3. SEE QUESTION #1

Beckett is now basically worthless for determining values - best option I’ve found is this site - shows exact selling prices of eBay recent sales :

https://130point.com

I do wonder when someone uses an LLM to effectively monitor sales and develop real time trends and ratios between product and variations.

I say this as I interpret the current problem is the data on eBay and other major sites is unstructured and quite dirty. You could use the LLM to clean and structure the data.

Yes. And the up arrow doesn't mean it's going up and the down arrow doesn't mean it's going down.

A guide is just that - a guide - and not meant to be the all-encompassing truth.

Guides are useful in figuring out whether someone’s trying to gouge you…which is one big reason why unethical sellers shun them entirely.

This is essentially what VCP and CardLadder are doing. The hardest part is getting all the major selling platforms to expose their data via API's (I assume neither VCP or CL are scraping data...THAT would be very painful). Once you can consume the data from API's, it's just a matter of creating new data models (one per platform), performing normalizations if necessary, and plucking the data points you need from each to shove into a DB and make it ready to populate your UI upon request.

I don't see LLM's helping with the data collection/aggregation/normalization/etc. It's a fair bit of code to write, but none of it is that complicated.

Welcome back to collecting again!

I grew up to looking at Beckett prices. Unfortunately, Beckett can no longer keep up with all the internet sales. On top of that, there are sooooo many different products and parallels, the magazine doesn’t even have room to list them all.

Looking up current card values is now easy today. Just research recent eBay sales online.

I hope that helps and have tons of fun collecting again!
