Default Top 5 pickups in 2023 -- Let's see em!

Hope everyone had a great 2023 both in collecting and in life. Let's see your top/favorite 5 additions to your collections this past year! Or if you've got a few more and can't decide, post them anyway, I'm sure nobody will be mad about seeing some great stuff.

Though not the most valuable things I picked up, these were the most fun or interesting ones to me:

1. Heritage minors Bo Jackson, love the Memphis Chicks uni, one of my favorite Bo cards in my collection now.
2. N29 Charles Getzin/Getzien. Closing in on the few cards for my N29 set so tracking down one the last ones is huge for me.
3. Costanza bobblehead given out at the Brooklyn Cyclones' Seinfeld theme night.
4. Yankees ticket stub. This was from the game that Penny Marshall, Tom Hanks, etc. filmed a brief scene at in the 1988 movie 'Big', one of my favorites.
5. The jersey Griffey wore for the 1999 MTV Rock n' Jock baseball game.

I'll go with the Seaver and the 75 and 90 WS tickets I got at the National. And I'll include the Crusade pickups together. Lots of pickups I love this year, but these are probably my favorites.

Since I buy mostly just bums there isn’t much to share.
With the recent trade this is probably the most notable.

I hope everyone had a great Christmas and here’s to an amazing 2024! Here’s my top 5 from 2023.

5. 2012 Topps Five Star Ruth/ Mantle dual bat #9/10. Don’t see these too often. From the first year of Five Star.

4. 2017 Panini Monumental Materials Ruth/Gehrig/Mantle/DiMaggio #1/2.

3. 2004 Donruss Elite Throwback Threads Babe Ruth/Lou Gehrig # 19/25. Always liked the looks of this card.

2. 2001 Upper Deck Legends of New York Babe Ruth cut auto PSA 10. Unnumbered, but there were 5 made.also my first GH Ruth auto.

1. 2001 SP Legendary Cuts Bar Ruth cut auto #4/7. My white whale - searched for years for a copy of this card. Happened to find it while scrolling through Instagram one day. Parted with a ‘98 E-X Essentials Credentials 9.5 Jeter and some LeBron PSA 10 rookies, but well worth it.

Honorable Mention

I haven't ripped wax in I don't know how many years. 10? 15? Anyway, when Ginter X went live seemingly out of the blue, I picked up a couple boxes on a whim. Thrilled to find these inside.

Trout 9/10
Cruz 1/5

#5

My first pre-war purchase, and one of my favorite players ever. Also my first slab submission...and also my first tough lesson with buying raw vintage. Fell prey to a seller who lumped this card in with several junk wax cards to circumvent eBay's Authenticity guarantee (does not apply to cards sold as a lot, evidently). Was very lucky to get an Authentic. A great card nonetheless.

#4

I've been a Josiah Gray fan since he was in the Dodgers system. Bummed out when he was shipped off to DC in the Trea/Max deal, but still wanted to follow him. Here's a cool rookie patch auto from Dynasty #'d to 5.

#3

Why stop at one below average major league starter RPA when you can have two? 2022 Inception #'d to 2.

#2

Did I mention that I'm a Josiah Gray fan? 2022 Gilded Super auto.

#1

My favorite card of 2023, despite not learning a damn thing about the slab submission process. Got the card for a mere $40 raw, but did not do my homework (again) on whether the card might have been trimmed. It was and I was thankful it was at least real. Still a not-super-common early card of Double X.

A top 3 would be easy, the E95 Honus Wagner, 1933 Gehrig, and T206 Cobb

I went through my collection the other day and picked these 12 as my top 12 for 2023 - the first year I got into pre-war and can't wait to add more!!!

Mine would probably have to be these five:

I first saw the Koufax/Aaron at a show in SF in early 2022. Seller was asking for $4000, and I offered $3000. Seller declined, and I got this one recently on ebay for maybe $1600+? The light blue color is glittery and I love color photos.

Foxx was a BIN that I probably overpaid for. But I love the GU glove cards of him, love multi piece GU, and wanted a big cut signature card from the DLP days.

Clemente was a card show pickup from the guy who pulled it. He even filmed himself opening the pack!

Ruth Button - probably something I never thought I'd own. I was in talks with the owner on this site a couple years ago for a different card, but I did want a shot at this. One morning, I see on Ebay that Steiner listed this card and the other card, graded, on Ebay. Not really sure what happened, but I had some funds at the time and the price seemed reasonable, so I bought it without much thought.

Fun idea, I'll put mine together tomorrow.

Also, I need that Costanza bobblehead!

Top 5 for the Kemp Card Collection

4 new 1/1s. Three are mini but still, he doesn’t have many. Glad to get three of the four 1/1s of TK’s most iconic card.

5th best TK card pickup was a Tacofractor. The rare insert set he’s in. Pictured with a bobblehead thematically related.

5 Best pickups from outside my TK card collection.

David Price gamer from a 2019 win. My 3rd DP gamer/win jersey, each from a different team. Need a blue jays and dodgers to finish the set.

Gunnar Henderson game used double ball from the same day as my son’s second birthday. Also hit off of a pitcher with our last name—one not a lot of big leaguers have had.

The helmet Ryan Flaherty was wearing during his famous “let’s go MFer” At bat against Chapman. Well, famous to a certain age of Os fans.

Tony Kemp broken bat from a game I says him play online Baltimore. In fact I have video of him breaking it. He rarely comes through Baltimore, so it was a big get.

Pedro didn’t have a lot of cool rare cards. And while he may not have been what was expected, he is a personal favorite.

White Sox fan here - it was a tough year! I collect Luis Robert, Eloy Jimenez, Yoan Moncada, Andrew Vaughn, and Colson Montgomery (and Justin Fields). Here are some of my favorites:

Just a top 1 for me. Was able to grab my #1 grail for my main PC player. Picked this up in early February and bought very very little the rest of the year. Nothing really moved the needle after picking up such a huge card (for me). Still need to free this from its hazy BGS prison and get into a CGC slab so I can really enjoy it.
