Does Alabama have rich people? Or did they luck into Saban?

The budget for a new coach is going to be fascinating

Man, didn't realize how old he was until I looked it up just now. Guy looked good for his age.

I'm sure they can pay a new coach. Problem is, they are poors when it comes to NIL.

What will be interesting is if a Lanning, Sark, etc... that is at a school that can afford to be at the top of the NIL world will actually take the job.

Will be an interesting time for college football. Depending on who follows Saban, we could see a lot of "I like Kentucky in basketball but Alabama in football" fans turn into "I like Kentucky in basketball but Georgia in football" fans.

Good luck to the man replacing him

I feel like any coach would want to go there and follow what Saban built up.

I've heard Lanning is at the top of the list.

a few years ago, Nick Saban was the main speaker at the Texas High School Coaches Association convention in San Antonio.

the coaches i went with played it off like they were too cool for school. "he's not even gonna be here, it's a video chat...whatever", they were saying.

at the convention, they had a bar code to scan and send him a question.

i submitted my question, not thinking i had a chance to get it answered by Saban, because there were over 30,000 coaches in attendance, so idk how many questions were submitted to him, but i said why not?

on the last day, my coaches all left early, and i went to the main ballroom and sure enough, Saban was there in person talking. this was the first year of the NIL deal if i'm not mistaken. he gave a good speech about "iron sharpens iron", how guys like Amari Cooper went to Bama to compete against the best players in the country everyday, which in turn would help them go pro.

then it got to the Q & A part, and my question was picked! i was on cloud 9, in a room of full of coaches, my question was picked. one of i believe 5 questions that was picked.

that's something i will never forget. very cool moment.

The way I see it is that with the NIL deals and transfer portal the playing field had been leveled. He no longer has the recruiting advantage that he once had and can't win a Championship every other year like in the past. He cried about the NIL deals saying they were unfair. Now that the talent is more spread out than it used to be he wants out.

His issue was that he can't develop players now, because everyone chases the money or playing time. He's 100% correct BTW. He would still make the playoff 95% of the time if he stayed.

That is correct. He felt bad for some of his kids leaving early knowing that is was the wrong decision for their football career. If some of them gutted it out and waited a year, they would be starters and competing for a natty. Draft stock would be high. Alabama is an NFL factory.

As far as NIL/Portal leveling the playing field. I would love to see some data around that. I think those only gave the bigger schools a bigger advantage. OSU's NIL budget is 20x greater than Indiana for example. The best player on Indiana will likely transfer to OSU if given the opportunity.

The whole portal thing is killing college football IMO. So many guys are leaving after 1 year to chase a bigger bag, and then leaving there to do the same thing again.

I have no idea really how you change anything, because I feel the kids should be able to leave a school anytime they want, but maybe have restrictions on some aspects. It's just crazy seeing so many 2nd year guys(sophomore/red shirt freshmen) just up and leave programs. It's like you have to re-recruit some guys for your program, and in turn this could potentially damage a player's career because it makes it more difficult to develop if they are changing systems/etc.

I was working on a master set of 2014 Upper Deck Conference Great autos and managed to snag this at a decent price early in the process. Pop 1 too.
