Default Ryne Sandberg

Unendless amount of negativity about a lot of things on here and in particular the junk wax era but Ryne Sandberg shouldn't be one of them. He's one of the biggest stars who is not only a collector, hasn't sold his career memorabilia, but battling cancer you can see in these posts from his house he's got them displayed prominently with pride.

Loved Ryno.

I also love that he worked his way up the managerial ladder before getting shafted, then set up to fail (although, he accepted that Philly job on his own accord).

I grew up rooting for the Cubbies and Ryne. I remember all those consecutive games at 2B without making an error.

But didn't even realize his name was pronounced "rhine" and not "Ryan" for many years.

Hope he's able to recover and live a long healthy life.

My uncle is from Chicago and a season ticket holder. When I was kid in the late 80s I used to visit him for 2 weeks every summer and we pretty much went to every home Cubs game when I was there. I even went to games before they had lights in Wrigley. And Ryno was definitley my favorite non Red Sox player beack then.

He was very generous with his time when he managed the Iowa Cubs. I was able to get his autograph IP a couple times. He was patient with the fans, spoke to us, posed for pictures. Class act all the way!

I was in Pennsylvania and went to an Iron Pigs minor league game. They were announcing the players and then said "and the manager for the Lehigh Iron Pigs, Ryne Sandberg!". I was like wait, THE Ryne Sandberg?? Never got a chance to see him play but it was cool to see him out there.

Love Ryne. He’s always been so generous with his time when it comes to the fans. Got his auto on a ball. Love seeing out and about around Wrigley occasionally. Our family bought some of his Obvious Shirts merch in support of his battle. Can’t wait to see him pull through and get out to Wrigley again.

I pulled a nice Ryne Sandberg card last year that I quite liked:

This one would be even better if they simply didn't add the printed name text.

True. Though not just Topps. At this point I think vintage should be 1985 and before rather than 1980.

Always was a fan, still have several pages in a binder of his cards along with Cal Jr. Still add stuff from time to time. Those guys are fun to collect because most of it is fairly inexpensive.

Everyone should have these cards! I am still trying to buy raw Fleer rookies to grade to upgrade the Fleer I bought for under $10. It is so hard to find raw one's worth grading, even though there are tons of them out there. Still looking for a nice OPC rookie and a pack pulled on-card auto.

He was always a true gentleman but very quiet guy behind the scenes. He led with his actions and not with his words for the most part.

I was lucky enough to have worked for the Cubs for much of the 80's and got to know the players due to the job I held. My heart hurts for Ryne right now.

I will never forget the corn cob dress his wife wore at his retirement announcement:

That seems like a fair point. When I was collecting everything under the sun, 1985 and earlier always had a special place in my heart and mind.

Ryno is the reason why I am a Cubs fan. It was 1989 and my dad started to collect cards with me as way to bond, plus he enjoyed the hobby. I remember my telling me about Ryne and how good of a player he was. I have an 1989 Topps Sandberg PSA 10 on my shelf to remind me of those days.

I'm a Red Sox fan but my uncle is from Chicago. He has Cubs season tickets and I used to visit him every summer in the late 80s and went to every Cubs game while I was visiting. I played second base in Little League so he quickly became my favorite non Red Sox player.

What the cubs did to him was horrible. String him along and then never offer him a real chance. At least Philly let him manage in the bigs.

Sandberg's first wife was not the most pleasant person to deal with. She thought very highly of herself and treated others with disdain.

Many of us saw that corncob dress the day he retired and just laughed. She thought she looked great while the rest of the world questioned her fashion choice.

I got his rookie card out of a vending box in the late 80s for 50¢, at the time I think Beckett valued it at $80. It was the only card I ever put in a screw down. It’s also off center like 80/20 but of course I didn’t know or care at the time. I still have it.

Best wishes for a recovery Mr. Sandberg.
