I admittedly know absolutely nothing about gambling, bookies, etc. but the idea that a person could be in debt far beyond their yearly salary doesn't seem super farfetched to me.

So let's say worst case scenario, Ohtani was actually betting and it was on baseball. Is he banned for life? I mean this isn't pennies.

This is the fishy part of the story. No bookie would ever let someone with his income lay 4.5 mil credit. They either had Ohtani’s word on backing him, or Ohtani was the one doing the betting.

This is very plausible as well.
I just really hope for the sake of baseball Ohtani comes out of this looking like he is covering debts for his friend.

But by the looks of it, stories just don’t add up.

Nah, I really don't believe Ohtani bet on these games. He knows nothing about other sports enough for him to bet that much. I haven't read anything about him showing that kind of keen interest in other sports in during his career and I have been following him since he was in Japan 2016. Given that his interpreter is an American Japanese who has been here since 1991, I could totally picture him getting into gambling other sports while enjoying the luxurious life thanks to Ohtani. I actually feel bad for Ohtani for Mizuhara to put him in such a lose-lose situation. If I were Ohtani I would have been livid but then what do I do for my buddy who is in real trouble owning money to a bookie. As a nice guy he is he basically bailed him out without fully understanding the full consequences such actions. I just hope his name gets cleared.

Reading about the story on ESPN's page with FanDuel adds popping up. Priceless.

Between this story and the recent story about Bruno Mars, not a great look for gambling (legal or not) recently.

no bookie is gonna take ohtani action, and have ohtani wire him money rather then crypto payments either.

It is farfetched that a bookie would extend such a large line of credit to someone making $200k per year (give of take) who isn't paying off the debts.

Not when he’s the interpreter for and good friend of someone worth 9 figures.
