There’s no way he has the green light to steal when he wants, right? That was an awful jump.

I think he tried to do too much based on how bad the guys are doing behind him right now. Probably thought that if he got to third one of them would at least be able to hit a sacrifice fly.

Orioles can't hold Soto back all game. Triple in his third at bat.

The million dollar question is, how much is Soto looking for? I think he turned down a 400 million dollar contract with the Nationals.

What a colossal mistake giving Jones all that money.

But I wonder how much is too much for the Yankees. Juan did turn down 400 million couple years ago. Is he looking for 500 million?600 million?

He'll get something higher than what he turned down. And he's made decent money those few years since he was traded. 21/22/23/24 woulda been part of the ~400 from Wash....about $80mil. So if he only gets 500, its more like 180mil over the 400 he could have taken.

Not a bad gamble.

I PC Soto. I have been following the Trout vs. Mookie thread. It got me to thinking what type of career milestones do you think Soto will achieve to justify his prices in the future? Doesn't seem likely he will get to 3000 hits or 500 HR like Cabrera. But should be able to put up 80+ career WAR with good longevity. Signing with the Yankees would also help keep him in the spot light.

Why can’t he get to 500 HRs? Soto had 160 HRs through his age 24 season. Cabrera had 138. Ortiz had only 20. Soto should be in his peak power years the next ~7 years. He’s not a 50 HR/year guy. But if he averages 35 a year these next 7 seasons, he’s at 405 entering his age 32 season. Really just needs good health after that to reach 500.

I guess you are right! I know you sort of collect Soto a little. Do you believe he will put up HOF numbers when it is all said and done?

If Soto hits 40 home runs this season, he will have 200 career home runs before he turns 26 years old. Mel Ott, Eddie Matthews, Albert Pujols, Jimmy Foxx, Mickey Mantle, Alex Rodriguez, and Frank Robinson are the only players to ever do that. You seriously don’t think Soto can hit 500 career home runs if he stays healthy?

You guys have changed my mind! If he stays healthy and has a long career he should be able to get there. 3000 hits will be more of a challenge because he walks so much. But he could become the greatest walk artist of the modern era and have the highest OBP of modern players.

I guess my question is will collectors still gravitate towards him when he gets into his 30's (assuming he is putting up all star numbers year after year). I have always been more of an Acuna fan due to the excitement of his play. Seems like collectors tend to gravitate to the power/speed guys. Will be interesting in 10 years to see how the Soto vs. Acuna debate plays out.

Yes. He’s had great health and has an approach at the plate that can last into his late 30s. He might never have a single insane numbers season, but he can put up really good numbers for 15 years.
