Can't decide if I am a fool, or brilliant for buying Julio while he is not performing well. Won the last 3 auctions I bid on. I think everyone is buying Elly De La Cruz at the moment (and I have to admit I wish Julio was playing like Elly).

2 parts: A. There is always a new crowd pleaser. Always. B. People buy cards hoping for a new GOAT or at least top 5 guy ever ever but then piss when it becomes less. No middle ground.

I think my expectation collecting Julio is that he performs like an All star year in and out and to flirt with being a 30/30 guy. I don't have any expectations that he will be an all time great or best player in the league type of guy.

The problem with collecting current players in being able to distinguish between variance in play (a cold streak) and a deep decline in play that alters the collectability of a player (if the player is not playing well, then its not fun for me to collect). I have not been able to master this difference in my collecting.

I keep on telling myself its only a matter of time before Julio figures it out (because he is a superstar, just no playing like one)! But this could be foolish thinking or brilliant thinking (same thing with collecting Acuna right now).

sean.

Do you enjoy collecting (JRod in this case) the players cards?
Are you bankrupting your family while collecting these cards?

a friend of mine has a great line, and i am paraphrasing...

This is one of the very few Hobbies that, if/when you are done with it, you can expect to at least get back some form of monetary value for it.

Now, will you "make money"? maybe, but probably not.

But this hobby beats doing drugs

We can have both, can't we? I happen to like doing some drugs while I am doing the hobby- just the legal drugs, of course, alcohol and cannabis and caffeine.

Also, Julio's still only 23. STILL!

For me the biggest red flag is every year for 3 seasons his OBP has gone down. When that turns around he can a MVP type season

Not to play devil's advocate, but if you're expecting him to play like an all-star every year and to be a 30-30 guy, then that translates to him becoming an eventual HOFer. He'd be an all-time great, by all accounts. If people are spending hundreds and thousands of dollars on his cards, then they likely have that same mindset.

That is true! 30/30 for 20 years and 90ish WAR would an all time great! I guess while he is young and healthy I would expect near 30/30 with SB numbers coming down over time and HR numbers going down after his prime (32ish?).

I guess I was expecting him to be better this year than last! And right now it does not seem that way.

With Julio, just sit in the recliner for now and see where the season ends. As I watch announcers talk up stats at this moment, no one wins WS in May. Or MVP.

Same goes for some kind of super consistent performance demand. If the stats add up at the end of the season, it’s fine. If they do not, then we have the conversation starter. As for mention of Ronald, I feel his knee will not hold up. I see things I do not like on the field imho. Not the right thread to discuss.

i like this approach.

another thing Sean, i would recommend also collecting someone retired as they have done what theyve done. if they are deceased, then they will not disappoint but may be fairly costly.

He always starts slow. Was batting .211 last year on May 19.

Speaking of drugs, Julio is either on or off them.

Sorta surprising how many guys who were elite last year and struggling mightily this year. JROD, Carroll, Acuna, Olson, Riley, Seager (though showing signs of life lately). And while note ever really elite, some guys have completely fallen off the cliff compared to 2023 (Soler, Bregman, etc).

Not sure why you would want to implicate someone, anyone even someone you may dislike, let alone a young professional baseball player who seems to be a fan favorite as a drug user unless you have definite proof of this. It is one thing to be upset with a players performance but to suggest drug use i would expect the accusing person to have definitive proof.

His BA and OBP aren't really THAT off from his career averages, but his lack of power is concerning. If his SLG % is still in the .300's come July, may be time to sound the alarm...at least on this season (he's hiding an injury, etc).

Tatis Jr. I can't move his card part of his MLB logo patch. I only own 1 card

People may joke about the whole ringworm/PEDs debacle, but I think the real reason he hasn't returned to pre-2022 form is he permanently jacked up his shoulder. The guy we saw 2019-2021 may be dead. He can still be a very good player, but he's no longer the elite bat he used to be.

This makes me sad! Not only am I the biggest Tatis Jr. bag holder, I am still a huge fan and I am still waiting for him to turn it around and get back to 2021 form. I am the last Tatis Jr. fan on BO I think.
