Been looking through ebay listing and of course there are a ton of Mays autos up right now. Many of these have his own authentication sticker, but am i recalling correctly that many of those are highly questionable?

My brother has an autograph of his on a scrap of paper. We were waiting for our car at Bally's Casino in Atlantic City like 30 years ago and my Dad was like "That's Willie Mays!" and just found some scrap in our car and he signed for us. My Dad eventually got it mounted on a plaque with his picture.

![]() Quick story about the autographed photo shown... when I was a sportswriter at The Daily Journal (Elizabeth, NJ) in 1991, I received a call from a public relations rep asking me to cover the grand opening of Mays' chicken eatery in the food court at Menlo Park Mall (Edison, NJ). He said I could interview him and bring an item to get signed. How could I pass up that opportunity! The PR rep said Mays would only sign promo cards (below) for the general public, but I could bring anything to get autographed because I was with the press. I brought with me a copy of a 1979 Mets yearbook I had in my basement. The inside back cover had a nice photo of Mays, who just had been inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown. The autographed photo has been a treasured item in my sports memorabilia collection ever since.

So disappointing that people are forging his authentication labels

Just wait a few month when prices go back to normal. There will be plenty of mays autos. The man signed quite a bit and lived a full life. Good luck

Not sure there will be much of a drop. They have been rising for some time. Personally I wouldn’t buy the sticker autos either.

Yeah, if I was looking at a card I would go for that-a beauty for sure. I am looking at signed HoF balls-not necessarily looking at Mays right now but they came up on an ebay search a lot since his death and got me thinking I had heard the Say Hey authentication was basically worthless.

That sadly is a forgery and the common style one that almost all Say Hey authenticates will look like.
