Skenes didn't even have his best stuff and the Braves still only scored 1 run. He was only throwing 97-98 (his average fastball this season was 99.6) and he was struggling with his control. The Braves still only hit 3 balls out of the infield (1 HR & 2 1B) plus two ground ball singles. I haven't seen a pitcher dominate like this in a while.

Right now only Suarez has a lower ERA and Skenes has the highest K/9 in the NL. All he lacks is innings. It will be interesting to see how many he throws. He is on pace for 130-135 which will be enough for ROY, but probably not enough to win CY.

A good question. Next possibility would be a #301 SP in Topps Chrome, I think, so I will make that my guess, sans autos in TC but then plenty in remaining products. A different guess one could make for next product w/auto.

On Baseball Tonight they were talking about which pitcher should start for the NL. They kept talking about seniority in an AS Game clubhouse and that honor should go to a vet and not a rookie.

When a rookie is dominating like Skenes he should start. F senority.

With the introduction of interleague play, those moments of watching a pitcher face the big names in the other league in an exhibition game are meaningless.

It should be Chris Sale starting, but the Braves will be starting him Sunday in a game that actually means something

...meanwhile Topps won't have a base card of him for another year. What the heck. They had one for Strasburg - that made it into the factory set (and I think S2) a month after his debut, but not for Skenes (who debuted a month earlier in the season than Strasburg)

Keep chasing those 2025 dollars at the expense of 2024 hype

He is hobby good currently. His card prices are not the norm for pitchers.

The reality is that he likely won't stay hobby good when his arm falls off.

Well, I'm glad to be wrong.

In fairness to me, I remember Adley Rutschman and Elly de la Cruz making early season debuts in the last two years and both base cards were held back until the next year.

And in fairness to me, I remember Topps producing card #661 to include Stephen Strasburg in the factory set a month after his debut. Same thing with Bryce Harper (I think). I think also Wander Franco (hey, whatever happened to that guy?) had a card inserted into the factory shortly after his debut....

The key to knowing who will be in update vs. the next year's series 1 is the Topps Now cards. If they have a rookie logo on their Topps Now debut card, they will be in that year's releases. If they will be held back for the next year (meaning they missed whatever cutoff Topps put in place for that season), they will have a "call up" logo instead of a rookie logo. So your thought process about timing of sets wasn't crazy, it's just that we don't have to guess anymore.
