Lots of value all around with these young guys though. If you compare to a few years ago where people were shoving piles of money at guys like Darius Bazley, Cam Reddish, Marvin Bagley, Kevin Knox, James Wiseman, we're in a way better place right now. At least you can buy a card of a guy who has shown big flashes on the court.
I’m pretty big into not only Amen but Cam Whitmore. I believe cams hobby ceiling is higher, but love watching the skillset Amen holds, it’s unfortunate his jump shot looks like a bent straw. Cam had the highest points per minute average for rookies and is only 19.

I have a nice pc of both

There's incredible value with this rookie class. Whitmore is cheap, Thompson is cheap, you can even take shots at a guy like Brandon Miller without getting too far into it. Reminds me of the good old days. You can actually take a shot at a player without getting obliterated. I'm loving it. Fun times in the hobby right now.

Heck, even a lot of Wemby stuff is creeping into the affordable category.

Rockets aren't going to be able to have 5 stars - imo investing in their young players is a bad move

Based on the playoffs, I like what I saw from Ben Sheppard.

Everyone seems to be pretty high on whitmore. Haven't really looked at him tbh, maybe after I'm done with Trey Murphy I'll take a look

My man CWhit needs to supplant JG in the starting lineup asap. I think it's all going to hinge on whether or not he can improve his 3 point shot. Because he's measurably better in every other aspect where it counts.

And he was only 16 because he reclassified and to a class one year ahead right before decommitting from UNC and committing to SC. If he stayed in his original recruiting class, he was the #1 overall player.

Does Brandon Miller still fall in this prospecting category? Seems like his stats indicate otherwise but it can be tough to tell after a single season. It seems his cards are priced higher than most or all of the players discussed but wanted to ask.

I’d say he’s definitely a prospect but I certainly wouldn’t be buying his cards. He’s not gonna be a #1 option and the Hornets are a small market and horrible team

I'll admit that I missed the boat on Johnson. After his first two years, I had written him off.
I felt Murphy was too old as a prospect coming out and was solely a shooter... after listening to some podcasts, they seem to think that he has some playmaking juice that could elevate his game.
I completely forgot about Eason since he was injured this year. Might get lost in the Rockets wing rotation with Jabari and Brooks there, but I like his stats at first glance.
I'm not bullish on Daniels since he can't shoot.

Thanks for the write up and sharing.
I echo this sentiment. Love these types of posts. Don't have to agree or disagree with everything, it's just always fun to read others' thoughts on players (especially the "non-obvious" ones)

Miller cards do always seem to pop up in the "big hit" posts on social media, seemingly indicating general perception of him is he's one of the big guys out of this class

But for the sake of prospecting, it doesn’t matter that they won’t all develop into stars in Houston. If you’re confident in a player, buy their high end rookie stuff while you can, because whether it’s in Houston or elsewhere, you’re betting that they’re going to develop into a top option.

That's exactly what was said about Nesmith and it was all true. Keep distance. If the Hornets sniff something Ball will get the flowers.

Then again, if the Insta breakers have actually established him as a "big hit" that intake of breath associated with his name will linger for years, whatever he does.

There is some other guy (GG?) who accomplishes this at the moment.

So buy who you like.

Another Nesmith thread?! It’s been far too long.

Time for some Trey Murphy

Pros:
  • Steph Curry range, floor bending gravity. Elite shooter from everywhere on the perimeter
  • Elite 3 level defensive potential
  • Good enough finisher to have 3 level scoring potential. Didn't see much in the area of mid range pullups but he probably could
  • Uses his gravity to playmake. If it wasn't direct assists, he had a lot of hockey assists. Just a smart passer overall that could lend itself to a secondary ball handler #2 option one day

Cons:
  • Takes some really bad 3s. Because he has the Steph range, he thinks he can pull up from 30 feet with 20 seconds left on the shot clock. Heat checks are one thing but randomly pulling from 30 feet early in the clock isn't great.
  • handle is somewhat loose and sloppy, doesn't really break down guys off the dribble so the shot creation is probably limited
  • Uncertain playing time

Basketball outlook: I think his ceiling is a #2 option on a contender. Think Mikal Bridges in his first season in BKN. He's obviously not a #1 guy but he's a really good player who does a little bit of everything well with the elite shooting & defense

Hobby outlook: You're pretty much betting on Ingram getting traded. If Ingram stays on the team there's really not much opportunity for Trey outside of spot up 3s. The key with prospecting imo is finding guys who have on ball potential. Self creation is the key to hobby success, because self creators score the ball.

I think Trey is tremendously underpriced for his potential. If Ingram isn't traded, Trey is an RFA next season so he's gonna get paid. If he's not traded I'm loading the boat this season.

I absolutely think that if the Pelicans want to contend they'll have to trade Ingram.
