Skenes plays the position that the hobby doesn't care about in baseball. Mahomes plays the only position the hobby cares about in football.

Us older guys have been around long enough to have seen players like Skenes get some early hype, and everyone think their cards are the next to hit astronomical levels, and then they don't. The issue is that Mahomes cards already have, for the most part. So I would say Mahomes is safer, but Skenes has the most risk/reward for your money now.
I wouldn't be surprised if this time next year, we're all reminiscing about the crazy hype of Skenes' cards, which are now way down. Then again, we could be kicking ourselves for not buying that $500 card in 2024 which is $5000 now. ![]() |

I'm trying to think of hyped pitchers that have had their cards increase after their rookie year and just about coming up blank. I'm sure there are a few, but I don't think there are any that is true for all but one or two after five years. You really have to go back to Roger Clemens to find a model for hobby success for Skenes (if you ignore Clemen's PEDs).

Mahomes is stable. He's very well-accomplished and his prices reflect that. He's a top 3 all-time QB and there's not much more he can do to further drive up the prices of most of his cards (especially the one in question) given that they're already astronomical. Skenes isn't accomplished so he has A LOT of downside risk (especially when considering his position [injury risk] and position [potential hobby love]). There's many other options to "invest" one's money where risk is minimal and upside is high (and a lot likelier than these 2 cards in question). |
