This sounds like the exception to the rule.

In theory, one could buy the boxes/cases and resell to the breakers outright for higher than 400/per

It’s actually quite complicated but at the same time very straightforward.
Your theory falls apart by your comments that everyone loses in card breaks. If what you’re saying is true, there’s no way their stimulus money would perpetuate into more and more, they would just lose it all the moment they began breaking. I’m not arguing with you that opening product is generally a losing proposition, what I’m arguing is that this isn’t new.

What is new since 2019 is that many who have invested in AI, crypto and chip stocks are up 20x.

There’s a lot of money floating around still and people don’t get into breaks to make money, they do it for the gambling aspect, many times to the point of degeneracy. But their six figure income supports that habit without bankruptcy to get in the way.

Everyone does pay more for the box collectively, however.

I never said everyone loses money. One guy in 30 will pull a $150 card out of a $450 box.

LET’S GOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!

And poker players don’t like playing against the house, it’s why they don’t.

Again, they don’t get into breaks for the purpose of making money, they do it with “profits” to get their “high”.

The card designs are generally pretty decent, and quite a few people collect the Canvas Collection cards....

I'll be going after the Will Clark/Buster Posey dual auto if one pops up at a reasonable price.....and there are quite a few other cool duals as well....Griffey/Ichiro, Brett/Schmidt, Maddux/Sandberg, Ripken/Murray that will be appealing to team collectors.

Unfortunately, that's what happens when you've got a single company releasing 25-30 products per sport per year.

A quick count of last year's Topps baseball products available on Blowout has 40 different pack-issued products. Throw in the Panini stuff and we are well over one baseball product for week.

I don't think we'll ever see the pre-2020 prices again in wax unless Fanatics really screws up. Like anything else, if you budget yourself and buy responsibly, opening boxes can still be a fun way to enjoy the hobby.

I limit myself to 3-5 products a year and keep spreadsheet to track my spending and "ROI" on cards I decide to sell from ripping.

I do pretty well for myself, but I don't want to watch someone else open my boxes online...I also recognize gouging when I see it..I regretfully opened some things over the past year that I just refuse to do anymore. I got lucky on a Dynasty case last year (hit a Gunnar, and got a good price slightly over cost on the case), but that was a 1-in-10 case that I got lucky on...

Museum is a $250-275/box product that they are charging double for, I cannot support that. Good for the breakers and that culture I suppose, but I think Topps will be losing some folks (like myself) who have disposable income that are smart enough to back away..I took a little longer to do it due to my love of the hobby, but "enough is enough".

I've been buying singles over the past few months and that is working out..I'll miss the "thrill" of opening packs, but this is just too much.
I think the money they are making in the breaking world these days far outweighs random people buying one box.

Are you familiar with that Layers of the Iceberg meme? I would be fascinated to see you do a deep dive into the layers of the breaking iceberg. From Fanatics, to the people at your LCS, and everyone else involved.

Seeing that in black and white just makes it feel, and it probably is, worse than the junk wax era.

Instead of 4 releases with 2-3 million cards per player we have 83 "different" releases with the same if not more cards per player.

I would love to know the identification of those doing flawless, national treasures, immaculate, prizm hobby and dynasty breaks.

Would we discover a bunch of pelibois? (funded by their seagoing parents of course?)
