I pretty much toss/recycle all the base (or give it away as packs in those little local library boxes in the neighborhood OR goodwill) as I open product. As for inserts and such, I hold for a bit, but, I don't have the time nor do I really want to put the effort into selling it all a few bucks at a time, so I end up just giving away/recycling if no real value all the same. I also try to purchase choice/fastbreak type boxes (anything I like that excludes the base) at every opportunity on products I like. I do let the RC's pile up a bit. My wife comes into my office every now and then, looks at my card mess, and asks me what the F I'm doing. Haha - little does she know it could be much much worse!

I'm actually going through a purge right now. I previously went through and threw out all of the base non-rookie cards and kept any stars, HOFers, RC, and insert prior to moving into our new home. But now, even those have gotten to the point of taking up too much room. I have now just finished going through and pulling out all of the "good" cards to make lots. For example, lots of Trout, Ohtani, Judge, Betts, Harper, Freeman, Acuna, Witt, Julio, etc., as well as team lots like the Astros, O's, Braves, Reds, etc. I am currently sitting with two 3 row monster boxes with about 5000 cards to sell. A great lot for someone looking for $.25 and $1 box material.
I am going to start going through to determine prices for the lots. I will probably start with eBay BIN prices to see if that gets any traction. I am concerned that most people search for specific cards and not Freddie Freeman lots. If that gets no traction, I will sell them here. My overall goal is to get rid of most everything in my closet and have the majority of my collection be PC and stored in my custom built card cabinet.

I just went through my PC and sorted out all the junk players that never made the cut for my team or the NFL in general. For example, guys like N'Keal Harry. I'm about to toss them all in the trash as I figure it would be less of a hassle than trying to move them. If I go on eBay and COMC just to search the guy, there is a combined 6,000 or so of his cards just sitting around. Back when I first started to collect, I was the same way and held on to every single insert and even some base card sets. Today, I realize nobody cares about this crap. Hell, it's debatable that they even care about hundreds of different parallels or serial numbered cards. Now, I just collect veterans who everybody knows and preferably PSA 10. Funny enough, I hear PSA is started to get a bunch of junk slabs coming through since people are grading everything including the commons.

my neighborhood has a local book library and I just tried to put cards in there yesterday for the first time -
will check in a few days if they have gone but I'd try pretty much anything before I threw cards away

I will put together Rc Logo sets of flagship and maybe Heritage and then have 2*3 PC guys. I will keep any superstar vet #'d Parallels and sell them but outside of that everything goes in the trash. Simply don't have the time or patience to try figuring out what to do with them. I've even tried random lots of 100 or 200 cards for $.99 before and not even a sniff.

I’m kinda scared to read some of the responses. I love to buy clean boxes of commons and build sets and sell the extras for a few cents each. Although it’s gotta be local, I’ve had bad experiences receiving bulk lots through the mail in the past. I’m not soliciting but if you’re not far from the birthplace of Matty hit me up.
That being said I’ve got a monster box of junk wax in poor condition I haven’t been able to toss, although it needs to go. Musty smelling Junk wax goes directly in the trash, 70s stuff depends on how bad it is, although if it’s not something I need it gets trashed. Oh and my inventory of opening day from 2020, it’s gotta go, maybe as dummy cards for shipping flagship. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Anybody who throws away cards is plain lazy....at least take the time to donate the cards.
There are plenty of youth oriented organization who would love to have cards....I donate cards to my local Cub Scout pack, my local Boys & Girls Club, my local elementary school, and also give cards to neighborhood kids. |

Every 18-24 months or so I'll move my bulk stuff at shows around here. Mostly looking for dealers that have $0.10 boxes and/or separated $0.25, $0.50, $1, etc.
I use the 5 row, 5,000 count boxes and get anywhere from $8 - $11 a row. $40 - $55/box and I'll move 3-8 at a time. I only sort by sport so they basically just get added to if/when I open stuff. Once I decide to sell, I'll do a final pass through for anything I can send to COMC that sells for more than $8 (dealers are made aware when I sell). Adding to it as I go takes a lot of the time out of it. The last pass can take some time depending on how many I have but idk, seems easy enough. Doing it every year or two helps too so it's not like I'm trying to bulk out stuff that's more than 2-3 years old at the time.

I've finally reduced down to having a few hundred cards per team (mostly stars, rookies, common relics, etc.) Going to try to lot them up and get rid of everything finally.
If that fails in the bin they go. I've tried donating locally and haven't gotten any takers. |

Feels like there's an opportunity for those who like looking through thousands of ("seemingly") base (and I say seemingly bc always the chance of an overlooked gem/SSP/whatever) to offer a service to review and sort the cards on behalf of the owner for an hourly fee or something.
I often wonder what I possibly overlooked that I threw into one of my many shoeboxes full of base that at the same time I don't have a whole lot of motivation to start combing through. |

That’s cool! Decent payback every now and again. I like the $8 line here, $8 and above is a “worth it” monetary number imo. Where I can get hung up is the word “sells”. You can get bobby witt jr and gunnar henderson rc’s for half that delivered from Ebay. Even Aaron Judge 2017 us1 doesn’t sell for $4, us166 doesn’t sell at $8. 2014 topps update mookie betts future is now inserts don’t sell for $8. This isn’t just picking a few cards, this is true with almost all of the best, most collected players in the game alt rc’s and inserts not actually selling for $8. And lesser cards even less. Not much is actually selling regularly for $8. *Maybe it is and sells and your local shows. Or maybe it sells eventually on comc when someone for some reason believes it’s worth that amount or more or soon-to-be-more, but disproportionately more often than not, it’s not; at least in my own previous experience. So I toss most. I’m not complaining about any of this. I like to open specifically flagship wax with my own hands (although haven’t all year) for the chance of hitting something big of the big couple rookies of each release. And I like hearing the unique suggestions and also from others admitting they’ve hit a similar point. |

I'd love to have found a place to take all the base cards I ended up sending through recycling. But I'm also not going to spend hundreds of hours trying to figure it out. (And for obvious safety and security reasons, I'm not posting on Facebook marketplace that I've got a huge card collection at this address, and please come help yourself to the base. We have enough burglaries around here without putting a target on my house.)
