Aiyuk vetoed the trade.

At this point SF needs to play hardball say we are done talking you play for what your contract is paying you and we will tag you in 2025 you don't like it tough you proved yourself a diva and we are done dealing with you.
Has Aiyuk given any indication on which teams he would approve being traded to?

Seems like the only two teams he wants to go to are Pittsburgh and Washington, and neither of them are good trade partners for the 49ers.

As someone else noted upthread, the problem is that Aiyuk has to find a team that is BOTH willing to pay him what he wants AND give the 49ers what they want.

The Patriots apparently met both conditions, but Aiyuk nevertheless vetoed a trade to New England.

And as far as I know, no information has come out about what the Browns offered Aiyuk and/or why he vetoed a trade to Cleveland.

He's really overplayed his hand and backed himself into a corner.....

Wow

And Amari Cooper apparently said 'I wouldn't mind's on Instagram after rumor of him being included in a trade with the 9ers. Seems highly unlikely he gets re-signed.

Justin Simmons visiting the Falcons. Hope he signs. Him next to Bates would be solid. He visited the Saints already I think.

I thought Bates was one of the most impactful FA signings last year, leaving the Bengals defensive backfield depleted and making an impact on the Falcons. I think you're right that it could be one heck of a defensive backfield combo is those two join up.

Ian Rapoport
@RapSheet
Update on Brandon Aiyuk:
-- The Steelers and #49ers have a deal on a potential trade and PIT is in a good place on an Aiyuk contract, sources say. If SF gives the final sign-off, it's done.
-- SF has an offer out to Aiyuk on a long-term deal for him to stay. He hasn't accepted.

My assumption is if they are signing Aiyuk to a long term deal, they won’t be singing Pickens to one.

They should be wrapping up a long term deal soon with Freiermuth and there won’t be a ton of money on the table.

I get they have a need at WR, but Pickens has better upside and I don’t think Aiyuk is a true 1.

I’m with you that I don’t get it and I’m not fully onboard with it.

Another reason why pre-season games need to go

Quote:
EAGAN, Minn. -- The status of J.J. McCarthy is in question after tests revealed the Minnesota Vikings rookie quarterback has a tear in the meniscus of his right knee, with a final determination to be made once he undergoes surgery this week.

Vikings coach Kevin O'Connell confirmed the injury Tuesday, saying it occurred during Saturday's 24-23 preseason victory over the Las Vegas Raiders.

Steelers should trade Pickens for that first SF can’t get for a legit WR then trade a third for Aiyuk. Pure genius.

Claypool on IR for the Bills, likely done for the year.

Remember when he had really good rookie season and he thought he was a top WR in the league?

Now he is on his fourth team and out for the year. Probably going to be team number 5 next year.

I have a nice optic parallel of him that I never got around to grading so I can sell it. Missed the boat on that one!!

You can still grade it.

The Steelers had a string of amazing 1st year WRs that stopped developing in year 2.

Sammie Coates, Martvais Bryant, Chase Claypool.

The jury is out on George right now.

Honest question. Wilson, Fields and even Kyle Allen are all on 1 year deals right now with the Steelers. How can they afford to pay Aiyuk $30+ MIL on a new deal. And still keep one of their QBs that will be starting this year?

2024 they can afford Aiyuk. But if Russ or Justin play well, that will be $30+ MIL a season right there as well. If not, they have to roll the dice on a rookie QB again (hasn't worked out since Big Ben) or overpay for a free agent next season. Typically you make a move like this, working around the money you have on the table to your QB already.

Sources: The #Browns have agreed to terms with standout, do-it-all LB Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, who cashes in after a Pro Bowl season.

He gets a 3-year deal worth up to $39M with $25M guaranteed in a deal negotiated by CAA that gets the 24-year old back to the table quickly.

This is a big part of the local discussion.

The sentiment is, if they are trading for Aiyuk this year, it’s an all in for this year move and they would welcome the difficulty of signing a QB who has performed well and figuring out what to do with Pickens.

Their desire to not trade players and not trade a 1st round pick indicates they aren’t going all in for this year.

As far as the “rolling with a rookie QB” and “not working out since Big Ben” the reality is they tried that once, with a horrible coordinator and way too many moving parts offensively. So I don’t think it would be wise to second guess going with a rookie QB or that they are thinking that either.

Personally I don’t want Aiyuk, thought I understand their desire to get him. They have George Pickens and a bunch of unproven doods or just doods behind him - and even he is relatively unproven as a consistent performer. But like you laid out, it’s a long term commitment at a secondary position when your primary position is up in the air/potentially costly starting next season.

They still have enough offensive talent to evaluate the long term viability of Wilson/Fields without committing long term to either Aiyuk or Pickens. Najee, Warren, Freiermuth are more tha e enough taken to surround the QB plus Pickens. They are just very thin at WR behind Pickens and seemingly want to address that now.

Many teams find a way to pay 2-4 players on a team top 5-10 money so I can't see Pitt being any different. Look at NOLA they kept kicking the can down the road with their cap for over a decade before finally paying the price.
