Ohtani hit that double on purpose to steal 3rd. He knows its best to get the 50th steal before the 50th homer.

When/if Ohtani hits 49 HRs, what would the chances be that he gets walked for the remainder of the season?

I mean no pitcher wants to give it up but their goal is to win the game. If they pitch around Ohtani they're dealing with Mookie, same as any other game. I don't really see it changing much at all.

As long as he doesn't get inside his own head he'll be fine. And he doesn't strike me as the kind of guy that does that.

I was coming at it from the angle that baseball is America's pastime, and for a non-American to set the 50/50 record, would the "higher-ups" allow it?

They tried to do that to Wladimir Balentein in Japan, but I don't think there's anything but good that comes to the league if sho goes 50/50.

Regarding Wladimir, I didn't know that (thank you for sharing) but I'm not surprised too.

Although I agree with you about the potential impact of Sho's 50/50 to the sport, I'm still curious to see what happens. Would be interesting to see some teams pitch to him and others clearly pitch around him.

Haha, any PR is good PR! The pitcher who gives up #50 will at least grow their social media following with all the photos/videos they're tagged in, ya? :P

Oh, maybe I'm naive but I think that ship sailed a long time ago. I mean at least half the league has to be foreign-born at this point right?

That's the hope, but how many all-time MLB records are held by foreign-born players? And, of those, how many were first set by a foreign-born player too?

I still come across individuals who are anti-Japanese because of WW2 on a consistent basis, although that population is somewhat dying off.

In any case, only time will tell. Definitely will be interesting to analyze too haha.

I don’t think there are a group of racist “higher ups” that control these types of things.

Great to see him make solid contact and get a couple hits. Hopefully the HR's will come easier if he's not hunting for them.

He already has the record. It's just that 50 is a round number.
