He scored his 6th goal of the year on like December 20th last year so he's having a much better start. Got his 7th last night.

Strome has really developed into that play making centre everyone he would be when he was drafted. That'll help

They look like a much faster team this year. Connor McMichael is looking more like Connor McDavid.

I hope Ovi nets 50 this year chugging soda at intermission and continues to defy the haters

Amen man. They’re 8-3, looking great.
2 points back of the devils with 4 games in hand.

They’re making the playoffs and they’ll be competitive for the foreseeable future.

Haters gonna hate!

That being said. I see a moderate run up on his cards until he breaks it.

The flood of Ovie cards that hit the market when he gets close or breaks it is going to be biblical.

Been trying to upgrade my Ovi YG PSA 8 to a 9 pretty much this whole year with no real luck...

There's definitely been an uptick in eBay listings lately, but they are all in the high teens or 2k's....

It's probably an 1100-1200 card right now...

It sounds like people want show prices. I wonder if the price spike will be much if he breaks the record this season.

The build up for the card would probably be better if he is short by a few goals and there is an off season anticipation for the record, similar to Aaron in 74'.

Another 2 Goals to the tally almost a hat trick, it's getting closer and closer great start to the season for Ovechkin. 863!

Agree, not just from a card perspective but imagine he's like 10 goals or fewer away going into the season. The ticket chase will be wild

Yes a serious spike in even a dead city like an Ottawa. Late in the season this will be a serious thing too.

If you could get a free puck like the baseball homerun look out the ticket speculation would be an nth degree more.

I've noticed since mid 2022 most hyped hall of fame induction and record breaking campaign hype hasn't materialized into much card value price increases across all sports. The only outlier I can think of was Ohtani's rookies when he got 50/50. One could argue his elbow issues (not pitching) suppressed his cards coming into 2024, so there was some room to grow anyway.

I would not bet on Ovi's cards increasing a lot. His cards spiked two seasons ago as the possibility of surpassing Gretzky seemed reasonable. There's definitely a lot of the record being broke already baked into his current prices.

That could be a reflection on the sports card marketing retreating in value from the pandemic peak too.

Ovechkin's cards went up in 2023 though, bucking that trend. No matter how it's spun, major gains are unlikely despite many people's hopes. Just a cautionary note for anyone looking to get in now, at the current price point.

I agree he's red hot, but the problem over the past few seasons is he can no longer sustain this kind of pace over an entire season. Also, he left the game last night with an apparent injury, which they're saying could be ligament-related. Ouch, literally and figuratively.

Out week-to-week. Conservative guess would be ~5-10 games missed. Still has a chance to break the record this season, but he will need to comeback and score at least at his career G/GP pace.

People are definitely pricing his rookies with the goal record in mind, that's for sure... Are they getting those prices though, I don't think so...

Hockey wise, I think the only thing that bumps RCs at this point are Stanley Cups and even that's rare...

Crosby didn't see a bump til I think the 3rd one...
Ovi saw a bump when they won theirs..
McDavid saw a bit of a bump just getting to the Finals...

I think the only other record we might see broken in our lifetime is all time points by McDavid, but I don't see him or Draisatl playing long enough to do it...

90+ goals and 200+ points in a season will never be seen again...

Ovie prices were higher 9-10 months ago when he heated up.

And they were even higher ~24 months ago. Probably the peak.

That's the prob with Young Guns, Mcdavid may not of gone up but people were snatching him up, unfortunately there's always gonna be someone willing to move an expensive Young Gun like that so prices aren't impacted much as supply is there.

I imagine it would be the same for a Matthews run, his Young Guns would get scooped up but there's so many I don't think it would go up a ton, although it's Toronto so it would def go up a bit

^^^ Matthews saw a bit of a bump a year or so ago when he was flirting with 70...

Ovi out 1-2 months with a fractured leg. Professional sports are tough, which is why career records (and legacies) are significant and difficult to eclipse. No one can cheat father time, only a few dare to try. Chase is officially on hold.

It's not like he'll be back playing at the level he left, so this means it's 99% likely the record stands until at least next year. Every year older he is the more father time has his way with sight and reflexes. It's just how the human body ages and why players don't play indefinitely, and face a sharp decline in production at some point that forces them out. Not wishing this on Ovi or anyone, but what I wish/don't wish doesn't change reality.

I’d bet everything I own he breaks the record. And he’s still got a shot to do it this year. A hairline fracture, although out 4-6 weeks is way better than any ligaments.

Most likely he scores 35 this year in total and breaks it by November 2025.
