Default 1986 Star Best of New Set: Info and Opinions Needed

hey everyone. been a while since i've been on the forums and never really on the basketball side. so i have inherited some cards from an uncle. i haven't gone thru everything yet but i did come across 2 sets of the 1986 Star Best of the New cards which include the Jordan.
Some things i know about the set:
-it is an odd set in terms of its history and how it was distributed
-i am aware it is not in its original packaging
-jordan was not on top when it was distributed
-psa will not grade only becket will it seems
-screw down holders suck and it shouldn't be in there hahaha
-yes i have seen recent ebay comps
with that said the cards at a quick glance look to be in very very good condition (no i would not expect a 10). what other info does anyone have on this set? how would i spot a fake? i dont believe it to be a fake as all the other cards i have seen in this collection are from mid 80s to early 90s. would you basketball heads advise selling raw as a set? should i break it up and sell raw individually? do i send them off to get graded?
i have only ever sent a card out one time (1979 o-pee-chee wayne gretzky went for an 8 got a 7) so never dealt with beckett.
thanks all for your help
Jesse

Geoff Wilson did a video on Youtube about Star company era cards with Steve Taft
Steve Taft also has a Facebook group where you can ask him more details
Grade them
Sets normally sell less than singles
Have a great 2025!

i saw that one and was kind of my starting point. thanks for your input!
i have reached out to steve taft who has advised me to look at the edges of the cards. if there is blue ink bleed on the back of one or more then they are the real deal.

I feel that Star is super interesting. If it wasn't out of my price range, I would want a few players of that.

Somethings you should know,Best of the new and old were printed 880 sets of each.giving to master dealers as a bonus for x amount of reg issue sets bought.there were also a bunch of best of the new sets printed but not given out, ended up being sold in 90 in an action.the original 880 sets had Ewing on top,the auction sets had Jordan on top.

You have an auction set,i do not know the production of the auction sets but based on availability id say a few 1000.some used to say the "jordan on top" sets were not lic,i believe it was proven all the best of the new sets were printed at the same time,

Cool! Thanks for this Steve taft told me "look for blue ink bleed on the back on one or more of the cards. If it's there they are legit" when I got home I looked and all of them seem to have that bleed so I think I'm sending them all out to get graded.

Color Bleed is a good way to tell, some have more bleed than others so you may have to look close on some cards.Steve knows more than anyone on Star so would always take his advice.i personally have never seen fake best of the new cards, its in the bag with the original seal you should be fine.most of the "fakes" are not really fakes per say.the shop at home cards were all real star cards printed by star with star plates by the star owner, problem was they were printed in 95 with cards dated from 86 so on an expired lic therefore considered "fakes"all of the shop at home cards were different from the sets made in 83/86 so easy to spot.

same for the type 2 cards, those were printed in 86 but without Star knowing by print shop employees, they used the original plates and card stock but the wrong ink, that ink didn't bleed thru like the reg printing did.this is where the bleed to look for came up.type 2's are as far as i know limited to the reg issue team bags of the bulls, celtics (both colors)lakers, knicks.and are easy to tell as they have no color bleed.the exceptions being the white celtics and lakers as they have white borders.

So I have found 10 complete sets of these in this collection. Crazy! Not sure how to approach this at this point. Do I open and grade all the Jordans? The Ewing's and Olajuwons? Sell the bags as is?

If your looking to sell i would open what you want to sell and grade all 4,yes even the Sampson and when they come back with a bit of luck you'll have at least a few sets worth to sell by grade.being a star collector myself can tell you we can be a strange group.if you can put sets together with the same grade "all 8's" all 9"s ect they will move pretty quickly if priced right.

Correct. I'm going to be sending in 10 Jordans, 4 Ewing's and 3 Olajuwons. I'm going to sell the rest raw. Honestly the only thing wrong with these cards is centering but because of that it doesn't seem worth grading those ones.

Is PSA even grading this set now? I thought they stopped. I remember I had a Ewing 85-86 XRC from the regular set last year and as best I could tell, they weren't.

my bad, you might wanna wait until psa grades them...

i sent in some 70-71 posters and they sent them back and then one month later they started grading them. kind of annoying cuz i sent em in then they were like , ya i guess we could start grading them, its like i pushed there decision as they may have felt bad sending them back.

Oh really? Their website still says in big bold letters we are not grading any year star cards.

Yes it's weird they do best of the old but not best of the new. I sent them to BGS yesterday anyways. The other stuff I have to get graded I guess is going to go to PSA tho (96 collectors choice Kobe -150+- of those and a 65 Topps Joe Namath)
