I’d like to nominate one of the biggest busts in hobby history that went on to have a very good career cut short by injuries.
Gregg Jefferies.

As a life long METS fan this hits home as I traded away any & everything for 88 Jefferies cards.

Started collecting in 1981-82 and built Topps complete sets from 1983-1992 & partial sets 1981-1982.

So 1988 rolls around and I had Jefferies fever BAD! 2 guys I grew up with seized the moment and started asking for the good RCs from my complete sets. Without any rational thought I broke all the sets apart stripping all of the RCs they wanted minus Mets.

By the time 1990 rolled around I had tons of worthless sets under the bed. LOL

Still have hundreds of 88-90 Jefferies cards and was happy about it. Ha!

I still have my 1988 Score Gregg Jefferies. Loved that card. He had a .500 batting average! (Sure it was 3-6, but hey!)

Honestly, I'd keep it as my "wallet card" but it has too much value to me and I don't want it getting damaged... so I keep a reprint Mickey Mantle there instead.

Inadequate.
Gregg Jefferies was good. He just wasn't very good.

I will say, he may be one we revisit down the road. He's close.

Annually. Right after the Hall of Fame announces the BBWAA members.

But the HOVG will induct players at any point in the year. Like now, for example.

superdan's nomination of the first ever Rookie of the Year, Roy Sievers. Turns out is he was very good.

Roy Sievers has now been inducted.

Has to be a big HoVG class?
Dustin Pedroia
Ian Kinsler
Felix Hernandez
Troy Tulowitzki

Ben Zobrist - based on his value and flexibility
Curtis Granderson - 344 HR
Hanley Ramirez - maybe too short of a prime.

If they aren't on the first page, make a case. Might want to search the thread and see if they have already been rejected.

Some of those players need to finish their 10 year run with the BWAA before they can be considered for the Hall of Very Good.

See Helton - they get added to the HoVG, but can be removed once/if they graduate to the HoF.

Ah. I’ll let Skip handle the details. I’m just over here preparing my Hanley Ramirez argument.

I am happy to announce we have kicked Billy Wagner, Dick Allen, and Dave Parker out of the Hall of Very Good. Don't come back.

The Hall of Very Good is pleased to announce it's 2025 Class of 1st Time Eligibles:
Adam Jones
Brian McCann
Curtis Granderson
Dustin Pedroia
Felix Hernandez
Hanley Ramirez
Ian Kinsler
Troy Tukowitzki

And newest non-1st time eligible inductee:
Eddie Yost

I was about to make an impassioned plea for Hanley, but it seems like he’s already in…?

I'll argue case for Ben Zobrist
44.5 bWAR (4.4 per 162)
2nd in MLB, 1st in AL in WAR in 2009 while playing 7 positions.
2 x WS winner
WS MVP - (bonus points for it being 2016 curse breaking Cubs)
3 x All-Star
Has to be one of the greatest utility men ever. His highest played position, 2B, only accounts for 57% of his games played. Less than 50% when taking into account games he played multiple positions (49.4%).

He was just inducted today. He's a 1st ballot HOVGer.

Hanley has the 4th best OPS+ of any Shortstop in history and 5th all-time in HRs. While I am not suggesting he should be a Hall of Famer, he should have definitely gotten more than zero votes.

But I had charts and graphs… and Power Points! A 3 hour presentation that I was able to edit down to 2.5 hours for sake of brevity!

Oh well, I guess I’ll just take the easy win.

The zero HOF votes probably has something to do with him calling himself a Hall of Famer shortly after signing his extension with the Marlins.

Yeah, I'd love to see it. I love Hanley. He was very good.

I'm a huge fan of his because, you know, 2015. But the competition today was very good. Made it tough for Ben. That being said, we can revisit his case.

I will add, as much as I like Zobrist, he was not the greatest utility man ever. Pete Rose is. But if we want to exclude HOF caliber players like Pete, then I'd probably lean toward Tony Phillips or maybe Pedro Guerrero.

I'll nominate Gary Matthews. He beats Garry Maddox (HOVG) in almost every offensive category and was the 1973 ROY. If Maddox makes the list, Matthews should be in as well.

Note: I did search this thread for "mathews" and "matthews" but did not see him mentioned yet.
