Curious to see if anybody could run numbers of amount of cards of a player. Say, how many 1987 Barry Bonds RCs are out there -300k Topps, + 300K , etc. - and compare that to how many 2022 Julio Rodriguez RCs - count up all the parallels - are out there. I would not be shocked if there is actually more of any given player RCs (on average) being made now than from 86-93. The old stuff feels like a lot more because it is a smaller amount of different cards so it seems like a lot more.

I bought 2001 Bowman Chrome packs from 7-11 in 2001 and pulled an Ichiro Gold Auto Redemption

Whether that makes it "junk" or not depends on context....for products where set-building is popular (like Heritage, Ginter, etc.) there is plenty of demand for base even though the single cards have minimal value.

I had looked through it a couple years back when I was home and there was maybe one or two cards I regretted not snagging to bring back home with me.
Yeah, I mean, I’m not even being sarcastic. Bring on the crash! I’ve been hearing about its impending arrival for a few years now. I would love to snag awesome cards on the cheap. We’ve already seen a massive drop since the pandemic highs and I love it. Take a guy like Jackson Chourio: if his RCs came out in 2020-21, I wouldn’t have been able to afford the collection I’m building now.

In 2021 a Bo Bichette TC refractor PSA 10 was going for ~$200! Madness! I would love to see an even bigger drop than what we’ve seen already. I don’t know why everyone says it in such a “The End is Nigh” kind of way around here.

So the junk wax era wasn't a true 1/1? I'm saddened by this.

Unlike yesteryear ( decades ago ), there are now too many products - some very limited, for this to be a junk wax era. The days of just Topps, Donruss, Upper Deck and Fleer are long gone.

It’s probably all too much, but haven’t the yell at the clouds people whined about cards not being accessible everywhere like they were kids?

I said the same thing a year ago when we were at Cracker Barrell. And especially when cards showed up at Costco.

Yeah, I’m not buying it…..

Back in the early nineties you could literally buy cards everywhere. I mean the Sunoco gas station that didn’t even sell soda had cards. The local Dinner sold cards, seemed like every store had an exclusive box set. Most of the places that sold cards in the 90s have gone out of business either recently or in the mid nineties. You could walk into almost any mail on a weekend and see a card show.

It was completely different the, and now I would be hard pressed to name anywhere locally that sells cards that isn’t Wal-Mart. Obviously I live in an extremely rural town instead of north Jersey like I did in the 90s.

End rant.

That's because there weren't breakers (thank god). It was the only way to get cards into people's hands. Now a huge percentage goes to carnival barkers with a youtube account and an iphone. And all the base goes in the trash...

I did this. It isn't number of specific cards printed, but it is number of different cards printed.

According to TCDB:
Ohtani - 2013-2024 - 20,633 cards - 1719 per year (from 2018 on, it is 20,134 cards or 2,876 per year)

Mantle - 1951-2024 - 17,713 cards - 239 per year

Mike Trout - 2009-2024 - 27,017 cards - 1688 per year

Griffey - 1989-2024 - 30,012 cards - 833 cards per year.

Chipper Jones (for my own PC curiosity) - 1990-2024 - 20,733 cards - 592 cards per year.

Julio Rodriguez - 2017-2024 - 7,603 - 950 cards per year.

If all there was of Jackson Chourio rookies were base and overprinted refractors, then it would be the junk wax era. But while the parallel inflation has gone through the roof, there's still enough unique and pretty rare stuff out there that I feel somewhat confident there will demand for the stuff.

Are modern base cards over printed? Yes.

Is that the same as the junk wax era? No.

I don't know if it's a lack of imagination or just pure ignorance from people in the hobby but this period looks nothing like the junk wax era. Open up a box of 1991 Leaf if you want to compare to today's products, all of which have a shot at some sort of actual, rare hit.

How many for Mantle just during the years he was an active player? I'm guessing it's less than 100.....

You can add Staples to the list....at least last week anyways in SATX.

My wife went there for a return and came home with pictures of grown men printed on cardboard for me.

At least back in the OG junk wax era you had multiple brands to pick from. If Fanatics had the monopoly back then those $5 boxes would've been $50.
