I didn’t watch this video to see the explanation but outstanding move here, in a couple ways:
Correct an obvious mistake that crushed a lot of collectors and traders of these cards And ensure a brisk hobby sell through of what promises to be a massive s2 print run at the new prices, now less dependent on key RCs a hair because of this announcement maybe.

I wouldn’t call it bullying- good merchants should always listen to their customers, and it appears that’s what they did in this instance. Black borders have always been popular in flagship, I can’t remember anyone calling for their removal. It’s just a shame they didn’t think about how their decision would be received until after the fact.

Curious why so little of '08 Update black Scherzer (7) and Kershaw (11) have surfaced, at least through PSA pop report. There must be a lot of '08 unopened material sitting in warehouses still? By 2011, both of them should have been chase cards so more '08 update should have been ripped before sealed product price really took off.

I don’t think Scherzer was truly chased until 2016/2017 but your point still holds. I think some of these made their way to BGS. And they are so incredibly condition sensitive, it doesn’t always make sense to grade them. I have a Scherzer Black RC that is pretty beat up. Seeing a PSA 5 or 6 on it isn’t going to bring me happiness, so it remains ungraded. Maybe I’ll get an Authentic on it one day.

PSA pop reports represent maybe 25-35% of a card print run....lots of cards go to Beckett or other graders or stay raw.

I have a huge collection of Heritage Black Refractors that are all raw....

remember that in 2008 making Flagship Master Sets was still a thing (and doable due to a fraction of parallels compared to today)

so for 2008 Topps you had:

Master Set Builders
Team Set Builders
Player Collectors.

i would say that the above collectors do not care about grading. they put their sets together and move on to their next build

Forgot that back in those days, BGS was relevant...their pop data...6 BGS Scherzer and 7 Kershaw. So between PSA and BGS, 13 Scherzers and 18 Kershaws out of the print run of 57 (with the possibility that some BGS may have been cracked out/submitted for the PSA label later on). Very true that some have never been submitted to either company...though now that their careers have played out for Hall of Fame, would think any of their black RCs would get slabbed.

I think the slow building momentum of Max’s career arc and popularity of blacks in general may mean that a fair percentage of these may have been cracked and boxed in the first few years after releasing. A few in Halloween pumpkins under the bowflex in the garage..
I don’t think the interest in him and the black parallels in general was as intense up until more recently. Prolly the huge jumps in Trout Update blacks helped drive that train by 2015? By the time people realized not every desirable card had to be a BCA and low numbered flagship parallels really started to gain a bigger following some were stowed away away from graders view?
Plus they’re so touchy on corners and edges.
