I live in a pretty poor county in NY State with a very high tax rate (used to be one of the highest in the nation). I was just reassessed last year for $90K. A few days ago the entire town was just reassessed and they hit me with $322K. Much of the town has gone up 50-100%.
Is there any way to fight it? I've went through the grievance process before but I was just told they aren't going to drop it more than 10-20%. So far the only person I have talked to where they didn't see at least a 50% increase was a friend of the assessor. Theirs went up a couple thousand. I feel like I may have been targeted this year for fighting my new assessment last year. I have seen my mortgage go from $1200 to $1800 and now likely $2300 ish in about 18 months. The $1200-$1800 I get because I built a workshop but I was just reassessed for that last year. I am more curious about any other NY residents if they just got the same treatment with assessments or if it was just my area. To make matters worse one of the main (last) major employers in my town just announced they are moving out of state and taking roughly 90% of the jobs with them. |

Its just hearsay at this point but someone mentioned the town assessor turned in the assessments 2-3 times and was rejected by the state repeatedly. My road was finally redone two years ago after over 30 years. They shorted the road 30 feet from where it was, I live on the last house so now the road doesn't even come to my sidewalk. To top it off late last year since they fudged up the ditches and didn't do their job fixing them my entire property including the new workshop I had built had a river 180 feet wide and 8-14 inches deep running through it all from run off up the road from a failed ditch. |

The county I live in is NUMBER 1 in all of NY State in regards to the tax rate. Yet, we are 48th out of 62 counties when it comes to household income. Figure that one out.

Isn't tax rate based on property value? It has nothing to do with income. I have same problem because my home has doubled in value over the past 5 years and it keeps going up and so do my taxes...and insurance. I'm getting ready to cash out and take my money to another state where life is less expensive.

Late to the party but will chime in for my CNY homies BGT and rmarl - simply put, NY sucks. None of my kids will stay here. I'm stuck because of my job can't easily be replicated (I've tried but now I'm older and the higher ed sector is taking an absolute beating right now,).
My home has lost close to $40k in market value if Zillow is to be believed. Will my taxes go down? Heck, no. I did try to fight my assessment once. Did a ton of research, mine was the highest-taxed of nearly 20 comps, with the fewest amenities, but its location (near my employer) was the only factor they considered. They literally laughed at me. NY is broken. Everyone who can should leave.

My taxes actually were lowered this year from 17.5k to 16k. Even though taxes are expensive, I am happy with the services that are provided by the town.

My property taxes are going to I believe more than double compared to last year even though it will be my second assessment in a year. My area sucks, no jobs, 2 hours away from any decent sized city. My market value is going to be in the $540K range which is absolutely laughable for where I live. if I had to guess before all of the new assessing the average price of a home in my area was probably $65K probably good for 1/2 acre, 2-3 bedrooms and 1-2 baths, 1600 SQFT.
