Most contracts are heavy on the back end. This is a natural consequence of giving a signing bonus and low salaries up front, then heavier salaries in the later years.

As far as Deshaun Watson is concerned.... I said what I meant and I meant what I said: You can't "kick the can" more than 1 year down the road past when the player is no longer on the team.

Watson is signed through 2026, then becomes a UFA (obviously the Browns can franchise him but that's not happening). The only way the Browns can "kick the can" to spread his cap hit beyond 2027 is if they actually extend him. He would have to actually stay a Cleveland Brown in 2027. Needless to say, Watson would have to go along with this. Also needless to say, this would cost Cleveland a lot of money - both real money and cap dollars - not to mention a roster spot.

DeShaun Watson is one of the worst signings in NFL history. Anyone in here think Cleveland is extending him? Because unless they do that, there's no "kicking the can" past 2027. All those void years accelerate to 2027.

Actually, he's THE WORST, when you look at what they gave up, and how many years he set them back. That's on the Browns though- it goes to show that no 1 player is worth all that, especially when they have baggage that he had, and they still made that trade even after his suspension and missed time. It's not even really close, AND they guaranteed all of his money. They screwed their team every way they could.
It's one thing if you gave up the farm for a MVPS like Lamar or Josh, guys with no character issues, but they shouldn't have touched this guy with a 10 ft pole.
He may never play another down in the league

Chiefs restructured Mahomes' contract, again. The move will save $49.4 million against the salary cap in 2025.

Just can’t believe there’s an elite QB just sitting out there. Seems like no one wants him. Baffling

The full amount isn't from Mahomes alone. Mahomes is saving about $35 million against the cap and Chris Jones is saving $14 million against the cap.

Mahomes will no doubt be getting an extension sooner or later but obviously they decided not to do that right now. The key difference between Mahomes and Watson is Watson is only signed through 2026 so Cleveland is almost at the wall past which they can no longer kick the can. Mahomes is signed through 2031 (plus the inevitable extension) so his cap hits will be pushed out about a decade.

When the guy is a star that is your long term QB, it's not a problem to keep kicking the can down the road with his money. The problems arise when you do it with a guy that you wish was off your team

It’s a sad state of affairs when we worry about 30 year olds in their ninth year being out of gas

I’m not even saying you’re wrong. Not directed at you or him as a player

More a blanket statement of how early some of these dudes simply sputter out

Dude is the guy on waivers in fantasy football every year that is projected to do something when you need a fill in and he’ll get you 3 points.

Saints must hate money

I could see it as Carr likes the TE. But then he’ll just throw to Foster Moreau

Seems like we are down to Giants, Steelers and Browns fighting over Rodgers and Wilson. Glad I'm not a fan of any of those teams

Can you imagine the fan base for both of those teams right now? And it seems that both prefer Rodgers over Wilson, since Rodgers is "taking his time to decide", and Wilson isn't signed. Both guys are dusty and washed. Why would two teams be hashing it out over them at this point in their careers?

Either way, no TEs in that offense get much love in the passing game

Any 30 yr old in the NFL (besides QB) I worry about. I worry about Engram's health more than his age. My hope was that they would try to get Mark Andrews, but here we are. If he stays healthy, maybe he can match his 2023 season - 114 catches, 963 yards, and 4 TDs. The Broncos as an entire team at their TE position this year had like 32 catches, 340 yards, and 2 TDS.

If Engram can get back to 2023 form, and even get 65-75 catches, 4 TDs, 600 yards, he's almost single handedly doubling the entire TE room production from 2024 for the Broncos, and he gives Nix an awesome red zone target.
I like the upside here

That's what's really awful, knowing that they are destined to get one of them, LOL.

Nah. They won’t

It’s Flacco, Cousins, or a pick

Rodgers and Wilson will not end up in Cleveland

Well, why trade for Cousins and get another washed guy? He is on parr with Rodgers or Wilson. Flacco was the best QB the Browns had on the team 2 yrs ago. He may be worth a flier
Never thought I'd rather have Flacco over Rodgers, Wilson, or Cousins but here we are

If I am the Broncos (who have made wonderful moves for the D in free agency so far) I am bringing in both Von Miller and CJ Mosely on cheap 1 yr deals to see how much gas they have left in the tank, because if they have any, this D would be dominant this season. The offense is getting upgraded too, a deep playoff run is possible
