Why has the Griffey market not kept up with the recent surge in the hobby?

MJ, Kobe, Barry Bonds, Barry Sanders, old vintage are all up a lot recently.

Did that Peapod scammer put a black mark on the Griffey community?

Scammer? Please fill us in

I ask the same question, however, I am enjoying this Griffey market and have picked up some great cards.

Are you referring to Joey Peapod? He’s been a member here for a long time. Did I miss something?

What exactly are you referring to?

MJ, Kobe and basketball in general are in different stratospheres. As for the rest, I would argue that Griffey in Mariners uniform(Late 90's) along with Jeter is what started a really big influx of demand for 90's cards that isn't regulated to this time period. A 1993 Finest Refractor Griffey just ended at over $20,000 in the latest Fanatics auction.....is that low? I mean, you aren't going to see a $1 million dollar MLB Debut patch Auto of The Kid but if one existed, it would probably pull $2 million or more.

1997 Pinnacle Totally Certified Platinum Gold #53 Ken Griffey Jr./30 BGS 10 Pop1

in the same Fanatics auction was down almost 40% from the last recorded sale two years earlier near the height of the Griffey market.

The good stuff is going to keep gaining steam. I don’t think Griffey’s hit his ceiling. 90’s inserts in general are going to keep going, especially as a backlash response to modern parallel overkill.

It's pointless to make judgments on the strength of a market with cards that rare. Any given day or auction will draw various levels of bidders and various amounts of available funds. One low sale means nothing.

But I'll ask what others did, but hasn't been responded to. What's with slandering Joey Peapod? If you know something, spill it. But calling someone a scammer then never responding about why you said it is classless.

Joey Peapod was kicked out of the 1990's to 2004 FB group, for selling cards then never shipping multiple times. He utilized the PWCC thing where you could put up cards as collateral to buy cards, got super over-leveraged, and was forced to liquidate most of his collection.

For reference, from the 90's-04 FB group:

Wow, had no idea. I’m not on FB, so thanks for sharing. That’s unfortunate.

Thank you for sharing that info. Too bad the one who called him a scammer never came back with info.

But we have 2 examples where he broke rules, but made both seller's whole? Not sure I'd go around calling someone a scammer for that. Was it wrong to offer a card he didn't have in hand yet? Of course. But he wasn't scamming anyone. I guess I just get annoyed by the unnecessary name calling.

That’s not the whole story.
