I was actually thinking of starting a separate ePack retropective Marvel thread to not confuse with this ePack Store sales thread.
EDIt: or maybe just a retrospective upper deck Marvel thread since half of UD’s Marvel output was not on ePack. They had a good run. They will be kicking themselves for letting Marvel get away. DC is going to be tough to sell at Marvel levels. Last edited by finfangfan; 03-26-2025 at 06:11 PM. |

We've seen this movie already when the Marvel license was taken from Rittenhouse and given to UD. In that case though, RH got shafted and ordered to destroy their incentive cards :'( |

I’m only in for the PMG’s and actor autos. If Topps can’t get actor autos then I’ll never touch their marvel product. These facsimile autos of the characters are terrible and I don’t know why anyone would spend good money on those.

I am 99% confident we end up getting a Topps Now release for a Marvel Movie premier that has autos from one or more actors. Might take forever to be fulfilled (I’m still waiting on my Jackson Holliday Topps Now first HR auto/relic) but can’t see Topps ignoring Marvel autos through the Topps Now format and likely dedicated movie sets as well.

Eh… they really just got the US Marvel license. So it’s 1.5 (including Genesis). Remember…It also took UD awhile to find their stride with Marvel after regaining the license in 2007. The initial 3 MM sets from 2007-2008 were actually pretty horrible. People loved the sketch per box ratio but the actual base sets were filled with errors and def subpar. It wasn’t until 2012 that Marvel Premier first hit and then a string of quality Marvel products arrived. I think the learning curve for Topps will be much quicker. It just takes time to make quality sets and that’s the reason for the delay. But I think Topps will end up doing well with Marvel fans and I seriously doubt Disney ever goes back to Upper Deck. At least not for a decade. Bump this post if I’m wrong before 2035 (and Blowout forums are still around… which is doubtful).

Also, I really enjoyed the 1 box of X-Men 97 that I nabbed direct from Topps. That was a fun break and the cards looked great! I think people that are complaining are complaining more about the modern breaker model and how box prices quickly skyrocket. The QC on the actual set is top notch.

I am in if UD can get a Peacemaker set on ePack. Could get the whole main cast along with some decent chase autos (Cena, Gunn, Patrick, etc.).

If we are talking exclusive license, then I think it would be around 2015ish

Like Dyna said, UD was putting out Marvel sets from 2007 onward after a brief hiatus. That’s what I mean. I get that Rittenhouse had the license, but UD released sets as well and the first premium one wasn’t until 2012 Marvel Premier which I mentioned in my post. The 2007-2008 MM sets had a sketch per box (which was quite a popular draw that we all loved), but the actual base cards and other inserts were pretty lousy and uninspired.

Marvel Masterpieces was a Skybox (Fleer) property long before Upper Deck bought them.

That whole thing is even more weird since Marvel (before it was ever bought by Disney) once owned Fleer/Skybox in the 1990’s! I was recently sorting through some old comics and have copies of a few of the Marvel Annual Reports (in comic form) that Marvel sent to investors. Those are fun!

It will be interesting to see if Gunn’s Superman takes off. DC really needs a hit to get back on track. Marvel has also had some troubles so it might just be the movie crowd now only supports a narrower group of properties. Deadpool obviously seems to be an outlier among the recent crop of super hero movies.

"Marvel Masterpieces" being owned by a company that UD *bought* ought to qualify as unbroken license-ship. Versus the broader, larger, Marvel trading card license that I thought we were talking about. As for one-offs, can't one argue that whatever cards bagged with Wizard magazine also constitute licensed use? Marvel over the years has created so many copyrighted IPs that I can hardly think that (made up example, for clarity) cards printed on the bottom of snack cake boxes means that Little Debbie's has a claim on what we're discussing here. Maybe we need a lawyer collector (no, that's really a bad idea, but let's run with it) to clarify every time we say 'the license changed hands'. That's an even worse idea. Point is that of course when we talk about "the hockey license" or "the Marvel license" or "the Star Wars license" here, we're talking about the company that holds the main trading card license for that IP, notwithstanding all of the one-off or even minor use of such IP Rittenhouse held the "main trading card license notwithstanding any existing use by UD for the pre-existing Marvel Masterpieces trademark or consumer packaged goods manufacturers printing one-off uses" doesn't roll off the tongue, does it? |

Paul Lesko. He's a lawyer and covers the trading card industry (probably other things, too). Pretty interesting reads that he puts together.
