I liked when Gretzky said to the Caps owner 'When I broke the record they bought me a Rolls Royce so you have your work cut out for you.'

I just turned it on and saw they were in a Power Play. I told my son to look up, he could witness history. Right after that, net! Glad I didn’t miss that.

Good for him.

Gretzky is, and ALWAYS will be the GOAT.

Awesome for Ovechkin and the game of hockey. This chase has been quite fun.

Hope Ovi can hold on to hit 1K goals and truly make the record unbreakable.

I would have never guessed Gretsky scoring record would be broken. Just on the simple fact we don't have 7 goal games every night. Congrats to Ovi!!

I heard a stat that Austin Matthews is on pace to break the record in 9 and half season so the record might be on loan for a decade or so....

Pretty sure the King's owner (Bruce McNall) was embezzling millions of dollars at the time, so he was prolly just laundering the money via the Rolls

As a Gretzky fan, I always felt this record would be broken at some point, just wasn't sure it'd be in my lifetime.

His 92 goals in a season, the 200+ point seasons and the career points record are the ones I don't think will ever be broken...

The reason Ovi was able to break the record at the pace of goal scoring he had was lack injuries/time on the IR. Matthews has already missed time due to injuries, and we don't know after his production fall off this year if these injuries are 'slowing him down' already.

I gave Ovi about a 1% chance of breaking the record this year after the last couple season dropoff. I had a chance at getting a YG rookie high grade for what is now an absurd price but it was when his leg injury return wasn't guaranteed. The fact he came back quickly and starting scoring in bunches right away is amazing, even if it looks like he's not exactly playing real hard out there. I don't feel that 39+ year old NHL players should be expected to play like 26 years olds in their prime.

Just remember that Gretzky's goal total was thought of as 'never to be broken', so in 31 years we can expect the next great goal scorer to break Ovi's.

Gretzky's record was absolutely going to be broken...but I was expecting Lemieux or Jagr to tackle it first.

To me, Lemieux is the best all around player in modern NHL history, and probably the most prototypical "hockey body."

But, as life happens...Lemieux had back issues, cancer and Jagr had a lockout and the KHL.

Hats off to Ovechkin.

Pretty cool that at this point they have played the exact same amount of career regular season games and seasons (1487 and 20) and its just a 1 goal difference

Yes it was Jagr's to break until he chased pay stubs in Russia...

No he's not a pure goal scorer more of poor man's Gretzky.

Fair point, but Ovi had a lockout in his draft year, then a half lockout in 2012-13, then two COVID-affected seasons. Grand total of games lost...167. So although he did stay healthy more than most - as did Gretzlky for what it's worth - he also was forced to miss a chunk of games that Matthews likely won't.

Jagr burned 3-4 prime'ish years playing in Russia.

Give him 100 points for each of those 4 years, he'd still be 500+ behind Gretzky for 1st place all time points...

When Ovi got into the league, he always seemed like someone who would go after the all time GOALS record.

I think most people expected/assumed/hoped Sid the Kid would be the one to go after all time POINTS record.

Injuries chip away at production though, not just games missed but caliber of play potentially impacted by the injury. Matthews hasn't been himself statistically. But until more seasons are played it's hard to know if it's just a down year or something that will end up slowing that goal scoring pace. Or the team around him isn't constructed for 69 goals each season anymore. Lemieux is a good example/comparable mentioned in a prior post.

Gretzky lost a few games to strikes but not as much as Hull, Jagr and Mario…thank goodness the NHL hasn’t had that problem lately

Management broke the union so strikes are basically in the past as long as the parties are on the same page.
