Thanks for sharing. That curio cabinet (and the cardboard box!) will live on as long as Griffey is relevant.

I am glad Upper Deck highlighted his collection.

Thanks for posting, I was just about to make a post since I have been letting other groups know.

Here's the info that his daughter posted.

Extremely sad to hear of the news. He was a great person and collector. I had known him from the Beckett Message Board days, almost 20 years ago now and then FCB. Even though I don't collect Griffey, we had exchanged countless emails over the years helping each other out when possible.

Such awful news. Knew him back in Beckett and FCB days. I think of him first when I see any rare Griffey card. Like I'm sure many other here, I still have a Magicpapa-signed playing card. Mike will be missed.

I am sorry to hear this. He was a very generous guy and a pillar in our card collecting community. I never knew the back story of his username. Makes sense now. RIP brother!

I was coming by this thread to mention this. Very sad. We've had great interactions over the last 25 years. He's bought Griffey cards from me in the past. It was fun to get the signed playing card in his shipments.

My condolences.

Default Fake or sample? 1996 Topps Ken Griffey Jr. Star Power Refractor (Not Topps Chrome)

I was going through my late father-in-law's collection and found this card.

As far as I can tell it's a fake -- it has the pixelated print of a fake Pokemon card, it's a refractor and yet it's not a Topps Chrome, the printing is off.

That said, it has a blank back and it if it's a fake it's a really, really bad one.

My FIL worked at Topps for a few decades and there's lots of samples and what not in his collection. Could this be one of those? Just wanted to get to the bottom of it before I chucked it.

Thanks!

Definitely no reason to chuck it given his prior connection to the company. There are a lot of people who know tons about the unreleased samples - you need to get linked up with them

I know -- at the end of the day it's just one card in a sea of tens of thousands. But I really dislike fakes and when I sell the collection I'd hate it to end up costing someone down the line.

I'm in the process of selling (or grading and selling) the more interesting stuff and will definitely be keeping the important stuff.

Can you grade or sell me a 97 Topps chrome refractor

With your father-in-law’s connection to topps it may be some mock up for a design or a test issue for some region. He held onto it for a reason and didn’t trash it so there is reason to believe it may hold value. Definitely do some more research on it. I for one would be interested in it. I am a Griffey collector and love oddball one offs even if they are non licensed cards.
