Default What will be the next year to hold product?

After 2017, Baseball and Football of course I started thinking about holding on to some product but it really didn’t set in for me till 2019. As much as I purchased in 2017 and 18 I now wish I held on to some stuff. I have a decent amount of 2020 Football. I know it’s impossible to know just wanted to see what you guys think will be the next year that will increase substantially in value based on the rookie class. I busted a lot of 2024 Baseball but I held on to some chrome update. Of course I have a but load of 2020-2023 baseball which hasn’t panned out for me as of yet and I’m missing the Bowman Update with Skenes. Listen, I love opening boxes but I try to think about the future as well and I’ve had so many missed opportunities.

Anything from the 1st year NFL or NBA Chrome come back to Topps. For Some reason people 20+ yrs down the road get the bug for nostalgia. Otherwise it's all dependent on the RC class from year to year.

Yeah I plan on busting and holding, especially Topps Chrome.

Yea, I wished I had held on to my Patrick mahomes that I sold for pennies on the dollar.

I opened a hobby box of 17 optic that I wish I held on to. I pulled 1-2 base Mahomes which I still have. I think I paid like 250 or so which at the time, January 2018, seemed ridiculous but man I wish I bought a case. It’s so hard to buy hobby boxes anymore, especially football. Now they start at 800+. I even used to buy NT back in the day but now it’s like 4-5 grand

What it boils down to is I have major FOMO so I try to buy a few hobby boxes of all the flagship baseball that comes out yearly just in case but even that is getting tough now. So many products between Topps, Topps Chrome, Update, Update Chrome and then all the Bowman products. I’ve just been unlucky so far in the ones I’ve held.

I continue to hold what little 2018 baseball I have (only interested in baseball). With the increase in print runs since, especially when Fanatics took over Topps, the supply of product has greatly increased compared to 2018 and before. Ohtani, Acuna and Soto will continue to drive 2018's desirability. I don't know if I will buy any more future product as a product "to hold". I rather go backwards and buy older product (such as 2018) even though the buy in price is significantly higher/baked in price for HOF possibilities. Instead of paying 400-500 on new unopen hobby box, I rather buy 2018 Topps S2/Update unopened...either to hold or possibly going for some lottery pull...or...just buy 2018 Topps RC singles of the big 3 when a deal comes up. Some people also talk up about how baseball prices will eventually "catch up" to hoops/football. If that ever become true, 2018 would be a good year to have in hand.

Makes sense, I just have a hard time spending that kind of money on 2018 when I bought it for the regular price in 18 lol. I have a bunch of 2019 Topps Chrome Update Mega boxes with Alonso, Tatis, Vlad and a few others. They currently sell for 55 bucks give or take, not bad for my 20 dollar purchase. I’m still holding hoping they creep up a little more. It’s so weird that they were 20 bucks back then, prices for boxes have tripled.

Yeah I have a decent amount of 21/22 baseball lmao. I’m holding my 2020 football, I have a good amount of blasters and megas from various products. It’s funny, Herbert was the big draw and now he’s like the 4th qb on the list behind Hurts, Burrow, maybe even Love. Jefferson as well but not much love for non qbs especially when talking about the price of boxes.

With the increased print runs and higher buy in prices, I am buying very few products to hold long term sealed. Topps occasionally offers some online only opportunities, but those become fewer amd further between.

I second this, but I do like 2021-22 BSKB for Cade Cunningham and a couple others, but as others have said, the over production since 2020 is insane.

It only takes 1 player which seems easy enough but if that 1 player isn’t Judge or Ohtani for baseball at least then you’re SOOL. So who’s the next Judge/Ohtani like player? Could be a while

I was still buying more 2018 baseball just last year to hold because you know, Ohtani, Ohtani, Ohtani. Acuna may utlimately have an outside shot of joining the HOF ranks and Juan Soto will probably be a lock.

I don't think you can ever truly miss going back and picking up more of anything if you believe in the rookie class. I know this is the baseball side of things but nobody is really mentioning the 2024 football class and I don't know why. That's been my biggest stock pickup since 2018 baseball, with a class of AT LEAST six QB's who have the ability to be great over the next decade. It's only going to take one of them to break out and win a Superbowl and you'll see prices double. Plus, we may see the push on "last class of Prizm" narrative out there in the future.

I personally have a lot of 2024 football sealed and opened. Didn’t really think it was worth mentioning yet Jayden Daniels can fall in the class of Stroud with a not so great sophomore year. Actually, I have football from 2020 and up. I think part of it is I’m tired of opening boxes and not getting anything great so figured I just hold onto it just in case lol. And I have a bunch of optic ordered from, Dick’s sporting goods which I ordered back in December and keeps getting pushed back. Looks like I won’t see anything till July or August but I have a fair amount coming. I really wish I could find some out in the wild or online I even tried getting some from Panini themselves and every time I get stuff in my cart I can’t check out

100% with the first paragraph. Even with today’s prices, chasing Ohtani is never going to get cheaper (unless he ended up in a Franco type situation). Stock will slowly dry up and boxes will only get more expensive. Add acuna and Soto for extra push in prices as well.

Highly disagree with your second paragraph. First 2025 will be last year prizm football. I was confused about this as well but panini still has this upcoming year. I’ve been collecting football steadily since 2009 and if I had a dollar for every time I heard someone say this qb class had “X” many great players and only one needs to be great to carry the class I’d be a millionaire multiple times over. Truth of the matter since I started collecting one qb has been great enough to really carry product value long term and that’s Mahomes. Before Mahomes you have Brady, that’s it’s. It’s Brady and Mahomes. Anything that’s not 2000 or 2017 is still a huge gamble at this point.

My bad about being the last year of Prizm, I've heard several people say this in the past and didn't even know it had been corrected.

Of course it's a "gamble" but Mahomes has seven years of age on the 2024 class so one of these in the future years will have someone that likely wins multiple Superbowls, even if that doesn't end up being last year's class.

2021 was a very hyped year that fizzled out, but there were really only three guys there who should have been taken seriously. I still feel 2020 is incredibly undervalued, with Hurts likely getting a second, if not a third chip at some point....and one of the others like Burrow or Herbert potentially getting there. 2020 blasters are still up a factor of 5x from cost at that point in time.

My point was, 2024 had such a LARGE QB class that I'm willing to take a pretty big gamble now for long term holds and hope to one day look back on how easy it was to get a lot of it at retail pricing when the factor has gone up X since then. It's definitely a more exciting class than 22 or 23 was, outside of Stroud.
