I agree. It's one of my faves. I have a gold RC from that set I'll be subbing soon.

Baseball Good Bobby

Seems like the market on him has pulled back a bit from Spring Training highs but is still considerably up from last fall.

It does seem that a lot of his stuff is moving well. Does anyone have a good feel on how his Ultra- High End ($10k+) stuff is doing?

Here's my only Witt. Picked it up a few weeks ago to move before nationals (or take to the National as trade bait).

Bobby Witt Jr. is legit… but his card prices sometimes act like they’re on a rollercoaster designed by Scott Boras. Great player, but the market’s got commitment issues.

The Bowman card looks like South Park’s Trevor and/or Phillip

For the most part his commodity stuff (Topps Update, BC Auto, etc) seem to be decently stable... somewhere in between Spring Training prices and Fall prices. Which isn't crazy because his 162 game projection this year is:

-198 Hits
-59 Doubles
-10 Triples
-55 SBs
-9.3 WAR

But also:
-17 Home Runs
-86 RBIs

It's been a very 'baseball good' start to the season, but not necessarily ESPN good. Probably could make for some good buying opportunities for guys who were holding this year and hoping for a clear cut MVP season (like Judge is having) who want to get out. Another 9+ WAR season would set the stage for a great run the season the power stats come along for the ride as well.

He's not going to ever likely have Judge and Ohtani type power numbers. If he just strings a series of 8+ war seasons together, the hobby stuff will take care of itself.

Agreed. Witt’s path to hobby success is going to be kinda like Mookie. Just keep accumulating WAR and stay steady. If he can add a bit more consistent power in to add to his bag swiping, he will certainly get a nice bump.

I really like him long term. He’s a logical third option to Judge and Ohtani and there’s enough player collectors in baseball (unlike other sports) where quality cards of the third option (and even further down) can carry some serious weight.

You need to realize Witt is priced pretty high so he needs to keep it up to avoid a drop, especially if the power numbers aren’t on point.

I actually agree with you 100 percent. His path is consistency. He’s also got the benefit of a few things happening in regards to where money is going to in baseball:

Soto becoming like KD and team hopping tamping down popularity as well as a down year thus far (he will still fare quite well long term)

Acuna’s knee injuries

Trout continuing his unfortunate string of injuries

Elly not stepping up

JRod disappearing

Chourio floundering after a decent start

Nothing against any of these guys, it’s just true. All of these things opened up cash to flow to Bobby IF he continues to play well.

On the flip side, Judge and Ohtani are eating up a ton of cash in the hobby so there’s that, but I think there’s room for BWJ at the hobby table.

who/what isnt "priced high"?

Wax addiction is at an all time high, so its not surprising that the top level MLBers are "high"

Haha, the funny thing is that he’s actually priced low relative to his “star power” (and performance) for the sport of baseball.

For NBA/NFL cards, you have players ranked 25-50th (maybe even lower) best on the “active” NBA/NFL player list selling for the same (or more) than BWJ (3rd-5th on best “active” MLB list).

That’s why you’re seeing an influx of NBA/NFL collectors coming into the baseball card world (and driving up break costs too). MLB cards are pretty cheap and have a lot of room to grow (maybe with the exception of Ohtani, his stuff is sky-high).

Good point regarding the migration of collectors. I expect that shift to continue. Football collecting is an absolute mess where prices are so high early on that it is impossible to get into. Basketball has too many pumpers and flippers.

What baseball is currently benefitting from is that you have 2 guys who have hit superstardom at the same time (Ohtani + Judge), something you haven't seen since the 90s (or debatably the 00s, but steroids makes that era funky).

Now people see Ohtani prices and are back to thinking "If I get on the train early, then Bobby Witt Jr. or Elly De La Cruz could get there". The issue with baseball is that there are far more Acuna's, Harpers, Bellingers then there are Ohtani's, Judge's, Griffey's.

The issue about where Bobby was priced this Spring Training is that he could ending up being the next Robin Yount and prices have room to fall....with his play style he probably needs to be more on the George Brett track for big bets at current prices to maintain or pay off.
