The issue about where Bobby was priced this Spring Training is that he could ending up being the next Robin Yount and prices have room to fall....with his play style he probably needs to be more on the George Brett track for big bets at current prices to maintain or pay off.
It’s funny. The entire time I’m reading your post I was thinking…

Fortunately/Unfortunately, it's not necessarily as much as investing in cards as it is the price to build a quality collection that fits my tastes.

What I mean by that is if I want a BC Auto in a nice grade, or a Heritage Real One Red, or a Topps US100 Black, I'm going to be dishing out some serious money. That's hard to do if I don't have a fair degree of confidence that the price levels are right.

So what that effectively does is it makes certain times of the year very tough to buy anything at all... I.E. Spring Training. The better route is to wait til things cool down and buy, but sometimes the very tough things to find don't show up when things are cool.

To be clear, we aren’t judging. Obviously people invest and even collectors like to see their cards increase in value. But it’s your collection so it’s up to you to decide what’s important. I will tell you, in addition to being a great player, Bobby is likable. He’s also a collector himself.

For me, I buy what I like and if something is too expensive, I don’t buy it. Supply and demand drive this hobby just like everything else. Except Purples. For that, you can blame Eric.

Yup. Also, invest if you want to. That's not a bad thing. ROI to date on Witt is not bad at all. Plenty of worse things that one could do with their hard earned money.

I apologize for any unorganized thoughts, my day just started and I'm a little tired haha.

BWJ doesn't need to, and never will, reach Ohtani's levels. There's nothing wrong with that either, Shotime is baseball's GOAT. But that doesn't mean BWJ's cards have no room to grow further, even at his current performance level (which is pretty good given his surrounding cast haha).

We already know that MLB cards are priced significantly lower than NBA/NFL cards. That means that either the former is undervalued, the latter is overvalued or it's a mixture of both. Personally, I'm a believer of option #1 or #3, with MLB cards being undervalued to a good extent.

We also know that there's significantly more pure collectors in MLB cards than NBA/NFL cards, which sets up a good floor (e.g., price/demand/etc) for the former. And we're seeing more and more NBA/NFL investors/flippers enter the MLB card world, most likely because prices are lower so risk is also lower and opportunities are higher (than NBA/MLB cards).

Also, something you've always preached is how important it is to pick the right cards (for a given player) too. As you're already aware, the "right" rare/limited (enough) cards "perform" significantly better than more readily available (yet still demanded) cards, primarily due to supply constraints.

I can't speak for all BWJ cards on the market (haven't tracked them all) but I can share that I've been offered 50% more than what I paid for a BWJ card I purchased at the end of March. I passed on the offer though. Why? Because I really like the card (collector in me) and also think BWJ (and the card) are quite undervalued (investor/flipper in me).

I know Shohei has a lot of variation in his signatures over the years, do the BW7 and BW(no 7) signatures tell a story as well? IE, is the (with 7) an earlier auto that got condensed over time to just BW?

Awesome cards - love them!

Thanks! The last three times I have been to a sit down signing with Bobby I just request the 7 from him; I prefer the look of it with the number. He's usually good about doing inscriptions or adding whatever people ask at the sit downs.

Through 49 games last year he also had 5 HRs. The year before he had 7. It’s early. He’ll get the power going.

Figured I should post my better cards. Latest pickup was the Sterling Extravaganza. Need a 2023 Stadium Club auto soon !
I'm a sucker for cards numbered with 7.
