We will need to revive the old "He's a DH, doesn't play defense" argument, if Ohtani is just "meh" as a pitcher.

I’m betting Pete Crow-Armstrong is the only baseball player in history where you can find autographed trading cards of BOTH parents.

Does the below set count as pre-PRC?

Nice black came in today. Rookie Debuts aren’t my favorite but I do like black parallels

He was cheaper than his contemporaries Elly, Wyatt, Jacksons, etc and he is now equaling them in price.

The hype is justifiably priced in for him now.

Or perhaps were the other guys too expensive to begin with?

Since his 2 HR game on 5/23 - .237/.281/.441/.722
20K in 15 games.
Still decent 2B/HR/RBI at 3/3/10 that equate to 32/32/108 over 162.
7 SB is a 76 steal on 162.

A PCA bowman 1st auto refractor psa 10 sold recently for $900

A jac caglianone bowman 1st auto refractor psa 10 sold recently for $1775

PCA is an MVP candidate and Jac just started playing nine games ago

I think that should be an indication

When the hype reaches this level, it's buyer beware time....

Anybody remember how hyped Luis Robert was in 2020?
Or Julio Rodriguez in 2022?
Or Wyatt Langford and Jackson Chourio in 2024?

Lots of young players have a great first season and then regress once opponents figure out their weaknesses and start to build a book on them.

What’s going for PCA is that he wasn’t the top dog upon release, just as people were buying Dustin Ackley instead of Anthony Rizzo and Nolan Arenado, Clint Frazier and Austin Meadows instead of Aaron judge, and Tyler Matzek and Jared Mitchell instead of Mike Trout and more recently Kevin Maitan and Nick Senzel instead of Ronald Acuna.

In many cases in hobby history, those second and third tier names sneak up on you and have a more lasting hobby presence - ignored initially and then you are spending the rest of his hobby career trying to catch up to his prices.

PCA also had the benefit of getting traded early in his career so building his legacy was delayed. He never put up jaw dropping stats in the minors so his hobby radar stayed relatively neutral until this year. Good call on anyone who got in early on him - this is exactly the type of player you can make a massive profit off of.

The Jac Caglianone's and Charlie Condon's of the world are impossible to turn a profit on because the initial buy in is as close to their peak you can get unless they become the next Aaron Judge or Shohei Ohtani. The value is only there if you're the one who actually had the luck to pull it from a pack / box.

True.

But the point that I was trying to make is that one good season (or partial season in PCA's case) does not make a career.

There have been lots of good young players who have had one good season only to then regress into fairly mundane players.

In addition to the guys on my original list you could add guys like Kris Bryant, Cody Bellinger, and many others....
