They can't, hence why he was pissed. If you watch Cruz, when the fan yells, he relaxes and let's the pitch go. He thought time was called.

I don’t agree with this. They are “professionals”, and dealing with opposing fans is expected. I was always taught as a child “sticks and stones”. Grow up/Man up and show the opposition with your game play.

They are payed enough to handle this

I don't support unruly fan behavior but the conversation reminds me of this tweet. Simpler times.

Don't know much about Pham, but one of my son's teammates is a White Sox fan and they went to a game last year deep in the midst of their terrible season. They said Pham was the only guy who gave anyone the time of day and was very nice to all the kids before the game. Seems like most of his "hot head" incidents have been at jerk fans or opposing players when their puffing their chests (him included). If other people have had negative interactions with him, I'll stand corrected.

Pham is a well known jerk within the league and a quick google search will show that

Did said quick google search and didn't see anything that contrary to my statement. Short fuse with bad fans and tough guy opposing players. Found stuff that said he was considered a good teammate though.

I also read he is a good teammate so yeah maybe a dude with a hot head but he definitely doesn't seem like a great dude. Usually great dudes though don't get into altercations outside strip clubs whether they instigate it or not

“I’m constantly ready to f*** someone up” - Tommy Pham

Do normal people you know speak this way and or have this mindset.

Pro athletes aren't normal people especially fringe talent guys that every team thinks their next prospect is better than yet still keep finding a job. As for the strip clubs, while I don't condone it, I remember hearing stories about how Bruce Chen took Yordano Ventura with him to strip clubs on the road when he was a rookie, so I'm pretty sure that's common in baseball and all of pro sports. As for getting stabbed, Ray Lewis and Paul Pierce both had high profile issues and Plaxico Burress shot himself in the leg at the club if I recall so I guess it happens sometimes in that lifestyle (again definitely not condoning it).

I'm not a Tommy Pham fan and really never even given much thought to him, but I read everyone saying he's a bad dude and crazy, but the only person I've ever known that has had a personal interaction with him said he took time when he didn't have to and was nice to everyone when his team was historically terrible and zero of his teammates felt compelled to do the same. It's not like he loved White Sox fans or anything, he's basically a mercenary at this point. My son's teammate's dad was just talking about going to the game and said Pham was the only guy took time for the kids. If other people have personal stories of him chucking a kids ball across the field or stealing lollipops from babies then I totally get it. I just thought he might be getting a bum wrap on here, that's all.

Also, after feeling like I've become a Tommy Pham apologist, I read his Wikipedia page. Sounds like the guy didn't exactly have an easy life. Born in Vegas. Mom was 17 when she had him and a twin sister. Dad was 19 and in jail when he was born and was "entangled in drugs and street crime for decades". Mom worked as a busser and casino waitress and was raised by grandparents. Meanwhile, doctors thought he had rickets so he wore leg braces for over a year. Was stabbed by his step dad. Was a16th round pick and spent 9 years in the minors before making it to the show.

I'm a big believer in personal responsibility, but that might help explain his “I’m constantly ready to f*** someone up” mindset. How many people do you know with that kind of background go on to be "normal people" and are able to succeed and keep succeeding at the age of 37 in a high pressure environment like professional sports?

Totally agree! Fans shouldn't have free reign to heckle or verbally abuse a player, because they just think they can. They should've been thrown out of the game and I don't blame Santana one bit. They were wrong to suspend him, he's only human too.

Listening to local Pittsburgh sports radio this morning & they reported the fans were mocking Santanas dead father & throwing nuts at him.

How about we all just go to the game and cheer on our team, boo the other team and quit with the stupid heckling altogether?

After the game, Santana said something like "I'm a calm guy but the fan went over the line" so I wondered what was said. Who says stuff like that?
