As I’ve said before things are also different now with how pitchers are viewed. For lack of a better term pitchers are cooler than they used to be. Pitchers get more clicks and views on pitching ninja then hitters prob do on bay social media platform and this translates to card prices.

It’s all pretty obviously just based on the fact that pitcher prices are way up across the board with respect to prospects. It’s just not Skenes but if you look at where Chase Burns came out of the gate it’s way above almost every pitcher in the past and I think this trend will continue going forward

But pitchers are like goalies - they don’t score and are entirely defensive players.

What gets folks excited about that? Enlighten us.

Is this actually true? It has been a relatively recent phenomenon that the "hobby" looks down on collecting and buying pitchers. Back in the 80s and 90s, pitchers were valued simililarly to hitters. Nolan Ryan was the single biggest seller back in the day. Eventually that dropped as pitchers became less collectible. But it wasn't always that way. And I certainly don't see a current market where pitchers are collected even remotely similarly to hitters. We have an entire thread here devoted to collecting pitchers solely because they get no hobby love.

One of the best things in baseball is when a pitcher has good stuff, hitters can't touch it and look stupid trying. Pure baseball. Pure awesomeness.

While it’s true that pitchers get far less hobby love it’s also true that prices are massively up across the board for big time prospects. I know personally I was buying tons of pitchers pre Skenes (and Skenes pre call up) it was simple, find guys that throw 100+ and invest. Currently buying almost no pitchers as prices are way way up. Take someone like Travis Sykes who by all measures will be a stud. You’re looking at like $75 for a base BCA. Stud (but not like Burns Smith level guys) are way way up across the board

pitchers don’t get as much love as they used to because (1) half the guys seem to get TJ surgery within their first 5 years as a pro, and the hobby doesn’t like major injuries, (2) pitchers just don’t throw as many innings as they used to, and (3) the hobby tends to move on from any player after they make it to the bigs unless they almost immediately perform at a HOF level (which is very rare for pitchers). #3 is even debatable when you consider Skenes, who’s been incredible outside of a few starts, but whose prices actually seem down from when he first debuted.

Pirates score 37 runs the previous 4 games. Can't score a single run over the 5 innings he pitched tonight.
At this point, I just have to figure his teammates hate him.

If he is, then he will post 300+ wins and 5,700 Ks against the best competition available. I’m going to say that won’t likely happen.

You think he will make those totals?

No one is ever getting 300 wins again nor 5700 Ks nor 7 no-hitters. However, 200 wins and 3000 Ks with and ERA much better than Ryan's 3.19 ERA+ 112 is doable.

I think he was referring to collectivity. For pitchers, you have Nolan Ryan, Sandy Koufax then the Big 3 of the dead ball era, Walter Johnson, Christ Mathewson and Cy Young. Skenes has a great chance to be like that.

Nolan Ryan also stayed remarkably healthy and pitched until 46. That in itself is a feat. Kershaw could see 300/4k but that would basically be 9 more healthy seasons and nobody expects that will happen. You've also gotta love baseball enough to even try for that and for most guys I think bowing out after 20 years feels good to them and nobody misses the game enough to go for any insane records.

I'm 41 and do a lot of soft tissue work to stay limber but I couldn't imagine finishing a workout and then heading to the stadium to warm up for 2 hours, and then pitch for 2 hours, and then do an hour of post-game treatment and then wake up early and do another treatment to ensure I don't get too stiff, and then 4 days later do it all over again...for 5 more years haha. It's really crazy to think about.

The comps to Ryan are a bit off. Ryan was blowing hitters away in record numbers. When Ryan became a full-time starter he led the league in Ks in 7 of the next 8 straight seasons. Skenes is tied for 7th in the NL. Hardly dominate as far as Ks go. His stats are good for a guy who pitches 5-6 innings per start. Meanwhile Ryan was pitching 125 CG between 1972-1977. Pitchers “dominating” 2 times through a lineup is one thing. Facing the same batters in the 8th and 9th and still racking up punch outs is another.
People may jot know but aside from his 7 no-hitters he also had 15 1-hitters and had 24 other no-hit bids broken up 7th inning or later

I think the comment was relating the hobby presence of Skenes to the hobby presence of Ryan. That’s all.

It’s not common for pitchers to take collector attention, and both certainly did for their respective collecting eras in the hobby.

If he was referring to collectability, and comparing Skenes to Ryan in that specific way - he didn’t state that openly or allude to that point. Is there something with these boards that precluded the poster’s ability to specifically state what he/she meant?

People were calling Kerry Wood, Mark Prior, and Matt Harvey "the next Nolan Ryan" as well....

This....Strider (2023) and Gerrit Cole (2022) are the only guys to register 250+ strikeouts in a season since the pandemic.

Nolan Ryan had SIX 300-strikeout seasons, including one at age 42.

Cole and Verlander are the last two to reach 300....both in 2019.

I think it’s just the nature of text communication - much can be left to interpretation.

We range from illiterate to PhD’s on these message boards, so it’s difficult to translate what is written sometimes.

Probably depends on one’s mood.

Let me know when Skenes racks up his first 300-strikeout season....or even his first 250-strikeout season.....

This guy is amazing

I do think he is the best player to invest in MLB right now

Obvious risk because he is a pitcher but he is doing everything he should be doing in year two

Pirates with zero runs in the eighth?

Skenes must be pitching today.
