Biggest trade of the deadline so far. It's crazy that the A's are now trading their elite pre-arb guys, but if you get one of the top prospects in all of baseball and you're not good right now, you definitely trade a reliever for them

That said, I think there's a lot of super young guys that get over-ranked just based on age. Which I get is a huge factor, but he hasn't exactly even raked in the A levels yet. Same thing with someone like Salas

That said, still a good deal for the A's all things considered IMO

If De Vries is truly worthy of being the #3 overall prospect at age 18, then this would seem to be a foolish trade by the Padres.

I know there are people who think Miller is some uber talent, but he gets shelled more often than he should. Certainly more often than you’d expect from a reliever fetching the #3 overall prospect!

And JP Sears is nothing special.

Let's see if they attempt to convert him back to a starter...

Or they're really trying to win now and De Vries likely won't sniff the majors for 2 more years and by that time their window is closed. There's always another "top" prospect, but flags fly forever.

Preller. Has. Lost. His. Friggin. Mind.

Why are relievers getting prospect packages as big as starters and hitters?

I can't wrap my brain around it. Never will.

I hate Emmanuel Clase so much

If that’s what Miller is worth? Clase would have been worth more in trade

I hate him. Hate

This has been my conclusion as well during this deadline. How does Jhoan Duran command a controllable and potential 2/3 starter in Mick Abel, Miller get baseball's #3 overall prospect...yet Eugenio Suarez - top hitter on the market - only gets 3 meh prospects? Reliever prices are stupid.

This is a what people are missing. Use him in the Pen now try to win word series. Meanwhile you may have just acquired Paul Skenes for next year

Miller had 1 season of low level d1. Then pitched like 25 innings in the minors. His second start in MLB was a 7 inning no hitter. Padres may have jsut picked up a top 5 SP in baseball. Not that it matters but he was my #2 SP prospect 2 years ago behind Skenes when he was closing and she been stockpiling cards waiting for the trade and conversion

That's definitely a take.

Well, sure. Of course it’s a win-now move—or, at least, an attempt at that. But SD could’ve given up a lot less for a reliever with a third the ERA.

But this is a team that already leads the league in bullpen ERA—but has an OPS under .700.

One slight difference: Skenes knows how to pitch. Miller is a mindless ox just throwing darts in a general direction.

My takes:

Padres make some questionable trades.

A's have some awesome positional talent. Too bad they cannot develop pitchers like they did in the 90's. I would love to seem them be dominant again. Maybe soon . . .

I think closers are going for more because well no starter goes deep anymore not even the best in baseball. You need lock down 7-8-9 inning guys.

Bieber was awesome. Sad to see him go

That’s a trade I make 100 times out of 100 though

He was done in Cleveland
