The ironic part is that he did for a period of time. Get in, get out, lock in your gains, and repeat. That is the secret recipe. I once prospected and held rookies and prospects for long periods of time. You can do ok, but you have a lot of losers that don't pan out. And it takes a long time, sometimes years.

On the flip side, a HUGE percentage of players get spikes. You can pretty easily time some of these spikes if you think ahead to draft, call ups, trades, free agency, HOF, etc. Find the spike, move them during the spike, and don't look back. Not only does your success rate become much higher, you can do it many times over and compound your gains during the same time frame that others are holding for years hoping someone produces down the road.

Wander made a lot of people a lot of money. You just never know when someone is going to turn out to be a turd of human being.

Couldn’t you say this about everything?

I love golf but it’s paying thousands of dollars (whether equipment or tee times) to put a ball into a hole in the ground

That’s just dumb. Dig a hole in your yard and throw a ball into it. Boom. Free hobby

And someone arbitrarily tells you how many swings it should take

Those sound like losers to me

Before I play this weekend

Prospecting is definitely a losing game long term - out of every bowman set there are like 3 players at best that become hobby relevant out of 100+

Prospecting has never been about the long term - it’s about taking profits when the opportunity presents itself.

You can relive that glorious pack opening.

I’ll probably pick up a box of the finest, or wait for update. I too like ripping. I haven’t done too bad this far, and it’s great collecting with my son.

But wouldn’t doing that make one a flipper boi?

Yes, prospectors by nature are flipper bois, though the good ones tend to be the more intelligent ones who sell to wannabe prospector flippa bois, who are commonly stuck holding heavy heavy bags.

Most of us are flipping at some point. I never cared for the derogatory "flipper boi" but when I see it, I envision some scrawny 19 year old who thinks he knows more than he does while talking too much going from table to table at a card show attempting to hustle up. Whatever works, I guess.

BTW, prospectors aren’t people who buy cards of prospects and hold them for twenty years - those guys are called bag holders most of the time. It’s a common misnomer in the hobby.

There was some sort of cosplay thing going on the same day as the big fall card show in Phoenix last year. There were two lines of Gandalfs and elves wrapped around the block. The line for the card show was like twenty people deep.

You realize all those cosplayers just want to bang right?

That’s like 10% of card collectors

I was not aware of that. Are you saying Chun Li may have wanted to bang?

I don’t know what a Chun Li is

But yes

Cosplay is an excuse for a GB

When you’re a character it doesn’t count

Furries and cosplayers are slightly different. The 300lb guy in a Luke Skywalker outfit isnt getting any anytime soon.

This is all news to me.

Have you really never played Street Fighter?

Was she in the original one? I haven’t played Street Fighter in at least 30+ years

She first shows up in the second one, which was in arcades in 90 or 91 if I remember correctly. Was a pretty big game when it made it to SNES and Genesis too.

I mean that's not true in the slightest. I went to San Diego Comic Con last week, maybe 10-15% of people were cosplaying (out of 100+k people). It's certainly not about hooking up.

Sure…

I catch your drift
