Default Is it me or was BGS Grading horrendous at the National??

Talked to a good amount of people who said the grading was awful. Now given, I know people get upset if they don’t get the grades they want, but they seemed to be extra inconsistent at the National this year.

I cracked a PSA 10, had the card signed, was extremely meticulous with it and no changes in condition (after thorough inspection) and BGS graded it a 9. Not a big dollar card (1990 Leaf Sammy Sosa)

Then had a 1984 Fleer Roger Clemens BGS 9, cracked it, got it signed, and it came back as a 9 on the resubmit. Great, happy. The centering grade went from an 8.5 to a 9 and one of the other subs got knocked down to offset it. Inconsistency.

Now my main gripe is the Auto grade on the below Bo Jackson. Maybe I’m
Missing something, but is there anything obvious any of you can see in why it got a 9?

Haha couldn’t be more true. I was a believer in them before, but they have just gotten progressively worse over the years

The PSA downgrade doesn’t surprise me. PSA is all over the place. Them disagreeing over minute details is normal.

I don't do any grading, so probably talking out my arse....but from an outsider looking in, I am guessing the best way to get consistent grading would be to make sure you get the same grader for all of your submissions.

I saw that. It’s as if they’re trying to go out of business!

I counted three different faint streaks on the card. So, hence a 9 auto.

I mean you see what you want to see right? But, it definitely deserved a 9.

The streaks in the bottom of the B, the loop of the J and the main line of the J. .

The idea that grading should be consistent is laughable.....which is why TPG is laughable in the first place.

A a whole, graders consist of people who are:

- different individuals
- with different levels of experience
- and different levels of training

The idea that you're going to get anything consistent out of that is a fantasy, especially with most companies utilizing 17 different grades.

No group of human beings is EVER going to be that consistently precise.

You'd actually have a lot more consistency if there were fewer grades and a lower level of precision....

I watched a guy who submitted to PSA through one of their special lines lose his mind over a soccer card he had graded because psa said a corner was soft and he said it was soft because of the design of the card with a white line going into it. PSA had a customer service manager-a really really heavy set guy talk to him for about 5-10 minutes about the graders thoughts on the card and why it got the grading that it did. Thought the collector had the stronger argument but the psa guy was incredibly polite with the time and gave all the feedback the grader had given him.

Grading is a necessary scam but BGS has just really fallen off a cliff.

Submit 10K card: PSA takes a value fee ($400). BGS flat rate.

Submit $100k card: PSA take a value fee ($4k). BGS flat rate.

See the difference?

That is a 10 autograph. Only a break in the signature is worth a 9 or less.

Plus their slabs are better, never understood why people fawn over the psa label.

Becketts is clean, classic and modern. PSA just looks like someone ran off Avery sticker sheets and slapped them on some coasters.

Because 99% of people don’t care about BGS. It’s dying and dying fast

I don’t sell. I only collect

If I get hit by a bus tonight my family can sell my PSA stuff. They can’t sell my BGS stuff… which is just leftover random crap anyway

Oh… and registry. You’ll never top the registry

So I whatever floats your boat but no one is ever catching PSA
