That sucks. The really should have inducted him over Leyland when the had the chance. God Bless Davey Johnson.

I followed the Braves box scores every morning in 1973 to see if Johnson, Aaron and Evans would all hit over 40 home runs and they did.

That was a huge story back then.

Nice player and great manager.

I know he did a lot in baseball, but he's forever the manager of the '86 Mets for me. Probably my favorite World Series outside of '85/'15.

Davey story ....

I interned with the Florida Collegiate Summer League (wood bat, similar to the Cape) in 2009. Davey was the manager of one of our teams, the DeLand Suns. Awesome guy, friendly to everyone, great story teller.

Anyway, he has this shortstop from Stetson University on his team. He tells the kid, "Son, if you want to play at the next level, it'll be through your arm, not your bat". He then spent the summer teaching the kid the pro tips and tricks of pitching.

It was Jacob deGrom.

I had no idea he was such an inspiration to deGrom. Great story!
