Hello,
Sharing an experience for awareness... Hope this post follows the rules, I have good intentions. I participate in auctions on sites like HiBid for singles, lots, etc.... Never had a major issues until today... Bought an auction flat of "sports cards" for $100... Only a few pictures of the flat filled with top loaders and screw downs and a single picture of a handful of cards. Got the box today and 3/4th's of it was empty screw downs and top loaders. To add insult to injury, the empty top loaders had prices and intel on them such as "Elway Jersey Card /200 - $49", etc. Not the platform's (HiBid) fault, as they just connect auctioneers to buyers, it's on the auctioneer... John T Henry is the auctioneer... Speaking about my experience as awareness and caution for others. Nothing more. Emailed the auctioneer stating I do not want a refund, as I am okay with spending $100 on a "grab bag" of cards, but it's deceptive to sell someone a "sports card lot" with 75% of it being empty plastics and to not picture or disclosure that. Hope this saves someone from what I just experienced. Thank you all. Happy collecting! |

That sucks. But buying a collection of cards with very few pictures is always a huge gamble. You know that when you bid. It also means many others shied away from large bids also due to the risk. Thanks for sharing, because people need to understand that when you gamble hoping for a big score, you are just as likely to get skunked.

I always bid based on what I see. Whatever you don't see is usually worthless.

Good points...
With the rising prices of wax, I find it satisfying in scouting various auctions and taking a "risk" on a grab bag in hopes of finding a gem or two. Not promoting one way or another, I still pick up wax... but have found random lots where I've uncovered some treasures... i.e. bought a $27 lot online and it had five 1998 and 1999 Fleer Platinum Medallions. None of them were pictured, and it was a nice rush to stumble upon... can't recall the all the names off the top of my head but know Justice and Galarraga were in there. Other times I've gotten a healthy amount of 1990 score in top loaders when I've rolled the dice. Some you win, some you lose... that's the hobby... but my point is, don't advertise a "card lot" when 75% of it is empty plastics, not cool and zero integrity. Simply shady marketing to optimize bidding and secure top dollar. Not how you acquire long-term loyalty from buyers. Trust is everything regardless if you picture all the items you're selling or not. I'm not running from the hobby or how I buy, just sharing my recent negative experience for some awareness. |
