What do you think long term his rookie year Downtown in a PSA 10? He doesn't have a 2018 so 2019 is his first year Downtown. I'm thinking about stashing one of those they run around 6/7k right now.

Last 2 nights in a row I was following the game, but passed out before Ohtani went deep. He needs to be more considerate to us east coasters and hit those bombs earlier!

I own a few baseball Downtowns, though not any of the ones from 2019. I feel like I always see a few more come up for sale during the off season, and that the price usually swings by like 20-30%. I also sometimes wonder if they are a repacker thing. I'm always hearing the football and basketball ones are popular with repackers, but I don't know if that holds true with baseball.

And you have to ask yourself “what true RC can I get in the $6-7k range that will hold better value”? If there is nothing out there that is comparable or better, you have your answer.

It's not a rookie year but his first Downtown and they were alot more rare back then. I haven't noticed any drop in prices in the off-season they just keep going up. I have other nice Ohtani's I'm stashing in PSA 10,Topps Finest refractor,Topps Chrome refractor(s) hitting and pitching and his Freshman Flash to /99 green.

I think both will do fine but I prefer Ohtani’s Kaboom over the Downtowns.

I know it’s not a RC. I was saying what true RC can you get in that price range. You can get a HiTek auto, X factor PSA10, BC Purple, Topps Finest Gold Refractor PSA 10…etc.

Will any 2018 RC in that price range hold better value than a non licensed DT? The answer for me is yes. I personally would rather have the finest gold refractor RC, than a 2nd year Ohtani DT. I probably would take a true RC auto over that as well.

Side note does he have a Panini Color Blast? Those are more rare aren’t they? And even a Kaboom is more rare, and probably more desirable long term.

. That said, the best path is obviously to grade if you think you will get a 10, but PSA has suddenly tightened their standard for Sho so it's not without risk and expense.

Maybe in the future I will sell some raw autos, but next month I’ll try my luck and send them to PSA.

Was thinking that since Ohtani went from the Angels to the Dodgers will collectors care less about non-licensed 2018 RC and autos from Panini? Does it really matter if the logos are missing if he doesn't play for the Angels anyways? I have no clue, but it was a thought.

i think the 2018 stuff will be fine. my comment was about the gimmicky stuff that theyve done since then

I was looking at unlicensed Donruss/Panini 2018 rookie autos as possibly a way to get his original sig cards for cheaper, but nope, while they may be technically cheaper than licensed, they still aren't "cheap". Lol

Perhaps not a bad thing? The Skenes pirate ship Downtown is cool, but otherwise I thought the latest round of DTs was pretty weak.

Topps also seems determined not to let us forget as we now have Topps Downtowns (HFA), Color Blasts (Helix), and Mangas (Anime).

I'm not some market expert or anything, but I don't think the demand for his rookie autos is gonna cool off anytime soon. Even if he keeps signing hundreds or thousands of cards a year, he likely never will use his rookie year sig on any future cards. So whatever supply of OG autos out there is it; no more will ever appear.

So as long as he ages gracefully, his rookie autos will probably just keep steadily marching upwards.

I CAN see a scenario where perhaps some of his later (like 4th-6th year) Angels autos at least stall out compared to his rookie and even Dodgers autos. But I really doubt prices of any of his autos will really fall outside of the entire card market tanking or he suffers career-threatening injury.

The smart move is to plan out a robust WBC set with on-card autos of MLB players, even if they are redemptions. That would move like crazy and be non-repetitive. The 50/50 thing is fun, but it's just another TWP stat protected by a deep moat.
