Default What Happens to Baseball Cards (and other sports) When Pokemon Craps the Bed?

Serious question.

When the Pokemon pump bursts, what happens to all the other things? Lookin late innings over there. Yesterday was the lowest sales volume for Pokemon on a single day in over a year... by a lot. One data point but its interesting. Could be a blip.

Anyway, maybe the roaches scatter and move over to sports?

Thoughts?

We can only conclude one thing - Police officers are going to run out of jokes if the thieves come back to baseball..

I worked at Target in high school in the mid 90s when Pokemon cards first hit the shelves. I wondered then how long the Pokemon fad would last. Here we are 30 years later, still wondering.

I am enjoying the more frequent shows (even if there is a lot of Pokemon), I hope it doesn't take the shows down with it.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying its not a real thing. I’m just saying trees don’t grow to the sky.

Has the Pokemon Go generation started to make real money yet? If not, there is room to grow.

The only thing that could kill the popularity of Pokemon, would be this type of story…

Ash Ketchum, who was a personal trainer for both Squirtle and Pikachu, testified that he injected Pikachu with steroids and human growth hormone (HGH) multiple times between 1998 and 2001. Ketchum was the prosecution's star witness in Pikachu's 2012 perjury trial.

Pokémon has been around long enough that it would have to have something major happen that it decreases so much or something comes in to replace it. I can't see anything coming in the near future (Disney cards aren't there yet and almost a blend of both sports and Pokémon with fake characters but has autos.)

Pokemon completely controls baseball. If it crashes, the hobby ceases to exist as well as baseball the game. There is a high likelihood that you will see Juan Soto bagging your groceries soon after the pokemon crash.

Really though:

1) Its September - This is very often the worst month for hobby sales in general.

2) Pokemon is not crashing.

3) Baseball cards are not crashing.

4) Kyle Schwarber is not a HOFer

5) Pokemon should do a collaboration with Topps. It would be awesome.

6) Kyle Schwarber is also not a MVP.

As long as there are still 7-12 year olds, Pokemon will be fine.

I thought the Pokémon bubble deflated in 2023, and perhaps it did since product was widely available for a while. Then it blew up again over the last year and you can't find anything at retail. I don't think it craps the bed, but perhaps it deflates a bit again. Another thing that helps Pokémon is there are a ton of women collecting it relative to their share of sports collectors.

I guess I should have specified. I'm a baseball guy mainly. I want to see the combo collaboration with Topps baseball. Similar to what they have done with Garbage Pail Kids. I'm not sure how to make it work, but the cross-over would be really cool. Probably some sort of anime battle of cartoon Judge fighting Charizard.

I think Pokemon is larger in pop culture than any pro sport will ever be - to a certain extent, something like baseball cards is looked upon as niche, where Pokemon will attract mainstream interest.

It’s not pump and dump thing where new players replace old ones to speculate on on a year to year basis.

Pokemon only has to do 1 thing if their sales start trending down. Serialized cards. That immediately reignites the entire game and takes it to a level it has never reached before. And this is from an outsider looking in. I'm sure they don't change anything while things are working so well. Don't fix what isn't broke.

Ha. I worked at Toys R Us at the time. Early Pokemon craze was wild.

If we haven't seen autographed Pokemon cards, we haven't seen peak.
