If Cal is to get all these extra MVP votes for being a catcher, I think it is *almost* equally as compelling that Judge, this generation's premier, record-breaking, slugging HR hitter, is also winning the battle title. I think so many people forget that, almost like it's so obvious that we overlook it, take it for granted, whatever. It is NOT normal, just like a catcher hitting so many HR is not normal.

I think people come to expect this from Judge. That's the problem. They're like, "Oh well. Judge is having another great season. Ho - hum...."

I'm starting to think that people expect more out of him. It's like he's not doing enough unless he's breaking records or hitting for the triple crown.

And for the whole "everyone gets a trophy", lets give it to someone else for a change people. Get over it.

It's the Jordan effect. Jordan should've won 7 straight Mvps but leave it to people to screw it up. I read an article where 13 gms in baseball were interviewed and the votes were like 7-6 between Judge and cal for mvp. I will not be surprised if Judge gets robbed.

It'll be the biggest MVP screw job since 1941 when Joe DiMaggio beat Ted Williams.

I am thoroughly expecting it though.

The voters hated Belle. But they hated Ted Williams as well. I don't have an answer for Altuve other than he was a feel good midget story.

Bell or Edgar Martinez were totally robbed in 1995. That said, Bell didn't help himself by being an arrogant prick. Perhaps it shouldn't matter but when voting is subject to human bias, that's the result. Pretty much the same deal with Schilling and the Hall.

At least Altuve had the same WAR as Judge in 2017. Horse apiece, trashcans aside.

Judge was a rookie with a 30.7% K-rate -- Altuve was a veteran with a track record who was in his prime.

Also, Judge was very unclutch that season -- he was by far the worst hitter in high-leverage situations versus neutral or low-leverage situations. In other words, he was a stat-padder -- his WPA (Win Probability Added) was ranked 46th in MLB, even though he had the second-highest OPS and wRC+.

This might be the first time I've ever heard a rookie called a stat padder. I always thought that was reserved for veterans for hang on too long and play like crap to get to 3000 hits or a certain number of homeruns.

Yes, in MLB that usually is what the term is reserved for -- Eddie Murray is a prime example.

But here's the definition according to AI:

Quote:
Stat padding is the act of a player artificially inflating their personal statistics (like points, rebounds, or assists) in a game or video game without contributing to the team's chances of winning or the overall game progress.
Looking at Judge's 2017 season splits, you can see that a disproportionate amount of his production at the plate came when it impacted his team's chances of winning a lot less:

Margin > 4 R: .382/.500/1.000, 17 HR, 112 PA

Low leverage: .295/.438/.665, 28 HR, 320 PA

Late & Close: .215/.380/.380, 3 HR, 100 PA

High leverage: .219/.361/.500, 7 HR, 122 PA

Jose Altuve, on the other hand, was quite productive in situations that mattered most that season:

Late & Close: .441/.529/.661, 10 HR, 70 PA

High leverage: .337/.400/.459, 3 HR, 110 PA, 14 SB (2 CS)

Jose Altuve was getting insider information in those situations that mattered most that season. IMO Stats dont matter when one of them was cheating.

But I'm just a salty Judge fan!

That’s not stat padding.
