You retain challenges if correct. So, it could be unlimited challenges if you only challenge incorrect calls.

Of course, I want full ABS on every pitch, but this is a step in the right direction. It will get people used to ABS and also see how much better getting calls right is than preserving human error. Eventually, even self-proclaimed "purists" will be in favor of it. Superiority always wins out over those clinging to alleged tradition.

So dumb. You have the technology, use it the whole game.

The best part is that we will hopefully never have to see another arrogant Angel Hernandez, Joe West, or Bucknor on the field if full-time ABS takes hold.

I mean, the ABS challenge system and full ABS are totally different dynamics.

Players will be more careful with which calls they challenge, meaning they will mostly only challenge blatantly bad calls from umps. While full ABS will completely reshape the effective strike-zone and the game overall.

Even in the article, they mention how full ABS led to more walks in the minor leagues.

Just announced during the Yankees game that Judge has had 362 balls called a strike below the knee resulting in 42Ks. He's going to enjoy ABS.

Fans and players care most about the blatantly missed ball-strike calls. The 50-50 pitches around the margins of the zone are never going to be called without some controversy and uncertainty, regardless of whether or not it's a human umpire or ABS calling them.

According to Statcast, 52 of the 951 called pitches that were outside the strike-zone to Judge this season were called strikes -- 5.5%. But 66 of the called 395 pitches that were in the strike-zone were called balls -- 16.7%

Completely agree. Tennis went to challenges, then automated line systems. I could not miss line judge and umpire judgments any less. ABS should also keep some of the histrionic arguing down, which would be good for the game.

And reducing arguing makes ABS a net positive in your opinion?

Just because fans could get used to ABS, doesn't make it a good thing for the game. People can get used to many things, good or bad.

The question should be, would ABS improve the entertainment of the game? Because entertainment is what MLB is in the business of -- people pay to watch MLB games so they can be entertained. Having a computer system automatically deciding balls and strikes is not exactly compelling stuff. The challenge system, on the other hand, can add more suspense and strategy to a game. And it can help eliminate the egregious calls that regularly elicit anger from players, managers, coaches and fans.

That’s good to hear, but I feel like the power to challenge calls may need to be taken away from the players because there’s a lot of egos out there that will struggle to admit they let a hittable pitch sail by on them. As long as reviews are limited, it should probably have to come from the manager, just like reviews are currently handled.

You (as a team) get to be wrong twice for the first nine innings. doesnt mater who uses it, once you are wrong twice, thats it. could be in the first inning.
This will (should) keep egos in check.

also, its pretty much an instant thing. there is no lingering, no looking into the dugout. the HP Umpire has the right to refuse the challenge if they feel it took too long to challenge, or if the player looks into the dugout for help

I agree. I was at about 6 spring training games this year when this challenge system was implemented. There were actually fewer challenges than I expected. Egos really weren't much of a factor. Both offensive and defensive players seemed very prudent with challenges and were usually right. And added benefit was that it provided an entertaining moment for the crowd as the challenge was broadcast on the scoreboard for all to watch. It look little time, didn't disrupt the game, and was fun. I still want fully ABS, but I didn't mind the challenge system at the games.

I went through the Wendelstedt Umpire Academy. I've read multiple books about umpires. I love baseball history.

I can't wait for them to introduce this and hopefully for every pitch. Let the robots get it right.

You make the MLB sound like WWE. ABS will ensure the players performance determine the outcome of games more than an umpire determining what he feels like is a ball or strike. It's bad enough we have umpires or are labeled as pitcher friendly or hitter friendly instead of being neutral, but they even change their calls during the middle of games. That is unacceptable.

That is great to hear!

ABS started in AAA/FSL starting with the 2023 Season.

in 2023 it was Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday = Full ABS
Friday, Saturday, and Sunday = Challenge System (3 per team)

in 2024 it was Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday = Full ABS
Friday, Saturday, and Sunday = Challenge System (3 per team)

That was just for the first half of the season. When the second half of the 2024 season started it was announced that the full week would be Challenges Only, so no more of the umpire being told what the pitch was via ear piece.

Another change that was announced was that the International League would be reducing the Team Challenges from Three per game, to Two. The PCL remained at Three per Team for the remainder of the 2024 season.

in 2025 it was the Challenge System all week for the first time, and the "Two Challenges Per Team" was adopted for all leagues using Challenges

ABS is not perfect -- it has a margin of error with pitchers on the periphery of the zone.

The challenge system should address obvious missed calls and prevent home plate umpires from blatantly tilting a game in one team's favor.

And yet there will be other calls missed by umpires which have the potential to still change the outcome of the game because a team won't let certain players challenge pitches for fear of losing their challenges too early. The Yankees broadcasters were talking about that last night after discussing it with Boone. The manager probably will determine ahead of time who can challenge and who can't challenge.

Its going to matter when, and what situation too. 3rd pitch of the game, probably not. Bases loaded, maybe.

And hold one for late innings regardless
