I'd love to see how this exact season would get voted on today. This is the 1984 AL MVP vote, where two of the top three were relief pitchers, including the winner.
Tony Armas and his 2.6 WAR led in HRs by a good margin Dwight Evans led in Runs and OPS Don Mattingly led in BA and hits Harold Baines (!) led in slugging percentage Only 7 points total went to starting pitchers And all the way at the bottom of the list with 1 point, Cal Ripken led in WAR with 10.

The corked bat incident happened the year prior to the MVP vote being discussed. I'm sure at least a couple of voters dropped him on their list because of that.

I see no one want to mention defence/postions? Obviously it’s rare for a catcher to have a huge offensive season, especially ones that are amazing defensively. Cal might not win the gold glove this year (hopefully it’s Kirk) but he won the gold glove/platinum glove last year. He’s one of the best defensively at a very demanding position. Even if judge has slightly better numbers offensively he plays in right and I have never once heard his name mentioned for a gold glove. It’s the same for the old pudge/manny debate. Pudge had an all time great season for a catcher offensively and was the best defensive catcher in the game. Manny never sniffed a gold glove, though he was fun to watch. Pudge deserved it in 99 as cal deserves it this year.

Don Mattingly over Rickey Henderson (3rd place) or even George Brett (2nd place) in 1985. It's one of those times a guy won MVP because of RBI. Especially egregious because Rickey was on the same team, but was significantly more valuable to the team that year. Juan Gonzalez over Griffey Jr. or A-Rod in 1996. I guess they split the vote. |

Yeah MVP voting is like the HOF voting. Character matters.

I always thought McGwire should’ve won in ‘98 over Sosa. I know the Cubs won the division that year, but man, it seemed like Dennis Eckersley and the Cardinal bullpen blew a lot of games.

Who cares, you shouldn't get dinged for playing on a crappy team.

Traditionally, the voters care. Also, the goal of the game is to win. Want to increase your chances of winning the MVP? Help your team win.

That Indians team was also absolutely loaded. Lofton, Vizquel, Thome, Ramirez, Murray, etc. The Red Sox not so much.

For good reason. He was a drunken roid head who drank coffee 24/7 which is not a good combination. He once destroyed the clubhouse because someone had the audacity to turn the thermostat above his preferred temperature of 58 degrees.

Nobody thought Vaughn had a better year than Belle.
It was 100% a personality issue.

Albert Belle 100%. I didn't know baseball too well but I knew a robbery when I saw one and I knew why.
The 1984 Voting is just nuts. I wonder if it would be Trammel, Hrbek, Murray, Ripken or Mattingly if it went today. Did the players cancel each other out back then Was that the mindset? So Orioles Murray/Ripken shouldn't win it, Tigers Gibson/Trammel
