Default '24 Panini Disney Anthology >> Topps Disney Chrome (and it's not even close)

I figured it was high time the 2024 (released in December) Panini Disney Anthology set got a topic. A few notes from my research:
  • Original art created for the release from scratch. Looks darn good for a change. Cards pay tribute to Disney history (mainly short films) rather than being soulless portraits with nonsense backgrounds (see Topps Disney Chrome).
  • 150 sketch cards total, reportedly each by an artist *prior involved to some extent with Disney. Each sketch corresponds to a unique short film from the pool of 150 covered.
  • The usual numbered parallel gimmicks for those who care about it.
  • Facesmile autographs present that are all the rave among the Topps influencers pushing Topps products hard.
  • Fancy box and manual.
  • More complete Duck comics characters lineup.

MSRP in Europe was 140E from what I can tell. I see one case (of 10 boxes) sold on US eBay for $585 shipped last month. That’s about 64% off MSRP, meanwhile people are lining up to buy Topps Disney Chrome above MSRP.

* "An extremely rare Sketch Card with an original drawing by a famous Disney artist" — from the auto-translated Panini product page.

EDIT: Panini's quick promo set overview video (auto-generated English subtitles available): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZW15A2JDYag&t=12s

^ These sketch cards sound a lot closer to the original Disney Treasures sketch cards, and if you follow those sold prices, they are bangers.

Default '24 Panini Disney Anthology >> Topps Disney Chrome (and it's not even close)

Doesn’t have the Topps Chrome pedigree/shininess that the sports people are flocking to

After looking at some base, it looks like this is more of a traditional looking non-sports set. With cards based on scenes/concepts etc. You are right, it’s a better and more interesting base set. BUT…that is not as conducive to the $$$/singles/flipping game…it’s better to have simple single character cards for that, like a portrait. People want a red refractor /5 of “Donald Duck” or “Goofy”, and not a red refractor /5 (or whatever the parallel is called) of “Clogged”, “How to Play Football”, “A Knight for a Day”, “Get a Horse!”, Pomp and Circumstance”, etc. For one thing individual characters have their own hierarchy of values in the hobby space.

But also…Im not familiar with this Panini set…if it’s a European release that probably has something to do with it. Panini also has put out some pretty great looking Harry Potter sets in the last few years, but since it’s a European thing, we don’t see much of it over in the US in terms of interest or hype. But it’s obvious why a Topps Chrome set is attracting a significant sports breaking/flipping crowd whereas a more traditional Disney set like this from Europe wouldn’t be.

Did Panini have to airbrush out the Disney logos on the clothing worn by the various characters? And how come Goofy wear clothes, talks, and walks upright, while Pluto wears none, only barks, and walks on all fours? Aren't they both dogs?

This is probably the quickest good overview (auto-generated English subtitles available): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZW15A2JDYag&t=12s
The set has some neat inserts as well, which actually required some effort when designing (again in contrast to what Topps puts out).

That's how things appear to an extent, with Topps Star Wars Mandalorian S1, Rogue One and Topps Now Andor S1 being contradictory examples where many scene cards are very valuable. Here's the thing, do people really know what they want, or do they just go off of what the influencers and shills tell them?

Yes, released in Europe - I think most popular in Germany and Italy (based on international eBay sales). The text on the cards and manual is in English.

No idea what you are talking about, is that a new thing? Cards look sharp to me without anything noticeably being blurred. Why would you want a Disney logo on characters’ clothes?

poetic license

Panini baseball cards aren't licensed by Major League baseball, only the players, so as a result, the sports uniforms, hats, etc., have the league copyrighted logos 'n such airbrushed out of the pictures. They look terrible, but for some reason, they keep being made. The joke was related to that.

The best Disney set remains the Disney Studios Collector Cards series, sold by mail in 2012 and 2013, although the Upper Deck Disney Treasures sets from 2003 have some good things going for them, and the 90's Skybox sets are simple, but charming.

Wait, so now Pluto can hold a pen and write his name?
Autographs of fictional characters in any set are ridiculous.

The Glow-In-The-Dark, Canvas, Lenticular, and Cel cards have all been done plenty, but they are ideal for a Disney set.
They all look sharp, especially the lenticulars, and the sketches appear to be very nicely drawn.

He's extremely nearsighted but yes, he can.

It's doesn't seem like that lei would fit over Pluto's giant snout, almost as if he would have to remove his head to put it on, which seems impossible to me. Because of that, I can't help but think that's not the real Pluto, but rather, a person in a costume. I hate to be so suspicious, though. I'm not usually that guy. Maybe that kind of lei has a snapback-type fastener.

I bought the case on eBay last month. Seemed too cheap not to buy.

Looking for Andre Dawson Serial numbered cards that are his jersey number - either #8 or #10. So looking for cards like 8/8 or 08/99 or 10/250.
