Damn, tough to hear. I had a stash of Greenwell RCs when I was a kid, I thought he was a surefire HOFer at one point.

Rest in peace Mike

Oh man RIP. I remember going on vacation with my parents when I was a kid and there randomly happened to be a card show going on at the hotel while we were there. Which was like something I would dream about happening. Anyway my dad was big on Greenwell and convinced me to buy his '87 Topps RC. I'll always associate him with that fantastic memory.

RIP, Mike Greenwell! Back in the late 80’s, I would get excited pulling his cards. He was definitely a solid player back then. Sad to hear he passed away so young.

Surprised to see he doesn't have that many certified autograph cards out there.

Dangit, seems like the 3rd or 4th Sox who died in his 50's/60's just these last couple years.

Rest In Peace.

Here's a fond recollection I have about Mike Greenwell, which some others here might recollect, too!. In '88 (might've been '89?), there was a write-up in one of the monthly sports card publications (definitely wasn't Beckett, and I'm almost certain that it was SCD). The article pertained to; of all things, a production/packaging,..."issue", surrounding a particular box of 1987 Donruss which someone had opened. The box-in-question was removed from a fresh case from the individuals LCS, and the..."curiosity" with his particular box; each & every single card....was of MIKE GREENWELL! Thirty-six packs,...fifteen cards per pack, equals FIVE HUNDRED AND FOURTY, Mike Greenwell RC's!

The primary talking-point of the article raised the question as to whether this could have been a genuine,..."oops" at the factory/during the pack-out process, OR,...if perhaps there was some nefarious intentions....behind the scenes, and that the box wound up being..."lost" or unaccounted for, in a chain of custody? Now, understandably, most....noobs, to the hobby, and/or...the young bucks, (respectfully) might not even know who Mike Greenwell is, let alone; what the (other than the obvious) significance of finding 540 of his 1987 Donruss rookie card might be. Well, considering that in 1988, a single, '87 Donruss Mike Greenwell RC had a high value, CCP (Current Card Prices) price of $3.00, on average,...applying the math, you'd arrive at a whopping grand total of of $1,620,....from an $18-20 box! Adjusting for inflation, that'd be nearly $4,500, in 2025 bucks!!

Nevertheless, again; RIP Mike Greenwell.

Greenwell might be the first guy I 'prospected' on. Him and then I jumped on the Ellis Burks train the following year.

Have this rookie he was a hot rookie for a few years but injuries cost him quality years on the back end of his career.

Similar to other posters I forgot he had a cancer diagnosis. First it's Ryno now Gator seeing baseball headlines feels like the obituary columns, thoughts prayers and condolences to his family and close friends...

The 4th in a long line of great Red Sox Left Fielders. From Ted Williams to Carl Yastrzemski to Jim Rice to Mike Greenwell. He may not have made the Hall of Fame because of injuries, but he made his mark and was a worthy successor to the LF legacy started by Teddy Ballgame.

Still holds the all-time record for most RBIs in a game where a player drives in all of their team’s runs with 9.

God Bless Mike Greenwell.

Career .303 hitter (or 120 wRC+ for the nerds). Glad he never played anywhere else! RIP Gator. No one swung at the first pitch every single at-bat like him!
