Durant will pass several really high profile names in career scoring in the next several years, and his cards are relatively low compared to some of his contemporary superstars.

After he retires, will his hobby following improve, stay the same, or fade away?

What will his card following be most similar to going forward?

The issue for KD is that the perception is that he's never led a team to a title.

Yes, he won two titles with the Dubs (and was Finals MVP both times), but that was a team that had already won a title without him, so he doesn't get much credit for helping them win those two titles.

And then the fact that he subsequently failed to even get to the Conference Finals with the Nets or Suns, let alone win a title, damages his reputation even further.

So IMHO, the perception of his career will probably be closest to someone like Barkley, who led one team to the Finals but lost, or maybe Karl Malone.

I can get on board with DRob/Hakeem. It's a shame because he had the potential to be a top 3-5 of all time. I've said it for years, but he really should have just stayed in Golden State the rest of his career. Eventually the dust would have settled and people would have just been used to him being there. The journeyman route that he has taken, along with no success while doing so, has really put a damper on his legacy.

He still doesn't get the credit he deserves, from fans of the game, for how great he was in the 2 Warriors chips. He got and deserved the FMVP both years.

Seeing some of the idiotic responses in this post is a big reason why I do not frequent this board anymore.

To compare him to guys like Barkley and Robinson is an insult, whether you're talking about the hobby or on the basketball court.

Right now KD is the most underrated player in the hobby, and his card prices obliterate guys in the poll.

If you're actually looking for the real answer as to who he compares to in the hobby, it would be Shaquille O'neal and Dwayne Wade.

Both players had stellar careers and countless accolades, but were overshadowed in the hobby by bigger superstars like Kobe, Jordan, and Lebron.

But after retirement, values and demand for both seemed to spike after people started to appreciate them more.

The funniest part about this post is that you can get a PSA 10 paper RC of all 4 of these guys for about $150ea

So sure, you may be right that he’s like Wade or Shaq but those guys aren’t super collectible either so… And from a basketball perspective Shaq blows away KD on every measure imaginable

Wade is a much better comparison and ironically that’s way closer to Robinson than Kobe. Wade was a great player but clearly a 2nd or 3rd tier great.

Wade, Robinson, KD are all in the same tier for both career and collectibility. Really good but not enough to matter

I think the legacy issue and the disrespect related to winning 2 titles with dubs will fade and is going to be forgotten by many, and his scoring ability will be preached more than now (all the nba legends will continue to speak about how he was a problem and the most difficult player to stop). Everyone right now only think about the dubs and not leading the team to title, this has been casting shadow over his generational talent and scoring abilities - which should be the nr1 thing when you think of KD and that’s what he will be remembered for

I think one thing that is overlooked with Durant is his dedication to Team USA basketball.

He loves the game of basketball and getting to play with other talented basketball players. Representing his country is also something that is very meaningful to him. When Covid was happening, most NBA players invited to play at the Olympics said 'no'. KD stood up and led the team when others were too afraid.

It’s interesting that Durant may actually be more respected/collected after he retires than while he is actually playing - a time when people can reflect back on his career achievements in its entirety.

I get the feeling like he has the appeal of Jordan in a wizards uni right now, minus the Jordan part, lol.

Will he be in the top third of players collected in this list? Or towards the bottom?

I actually think Durant will be remembered more positively than people think. He is a pretty unique player -- a 7-foot-tall shooter and ball handler. His controversial past and persona will always keep him in the conversation. He won't just disappear -- he's going to stay involved in the game somehow. He's too opinionated.

David Robinson, bless him, is a humble man -- he gets forgotten because of it. Other big men of that era are more remembered -- Shaq, Hakeem, Duncan, etc.
