Just curious, if you collect current players, but don't collect Ohtani, tell me why? - Page 4

While I'm far less likely to care about Ohtani in a 'hobby' manner now that he's a Dodger (I'm a Giants fan), I don't collect really any specific player at this point.

When I got back into cards in 18, I started opening lots of stuff (mainly chrome and flagship, with some Heritage, Archives and other lower end products) over the next few years and realized quickly, I don't really have any strong attachments to any player, not even on the Giants and there was just too much now to just buy boxes because those packs brought little joy and lots of WTF am I doing with all this base and some random colored parallels of Roy. G Biv at the end of every rip.

I got lucky and beat the odds and hit a low numbered thing (a printing plate out of an 18 update blaster) and decided to rainbow it. And well, that's what I do now. I (photo) rainbow run something every year based on pulls (historically). Last year I did it a little different going off of houdini's 100 case breaks for a few players each in S1 & 2 that I got real cheap because I can't find retail now and stuff just got too expensive to go and buy a bunch of hobby boxes of whatever. I expect I'll do something to line myself up for how I'll run a rainbow in 25 (likely based on a real cheap low numbered parallel I can snag and run from there).

So if I come by a bad listing and I get a /5 Ohtani flagship card, then sure I'll make a run at it in 25, but otherwise, I'll continue to rainbow chase someone random-ish (all 5 of my 24 runs and my 20 rainbow run are Giants) and be content with that whether it's a random player on the Marlins, or a big star.

My main reason that I do not own any Ohtani is not because I do not like him, but I just think he has a lot of rookie cards, a lot of rookie autographs, and they are all very very expensive. I know they are expensive for good reason, but I could purchase the second or third best card ever for a different player for the same cost of the 500th best Ohtani card for the same price.

I also pc my favorite players to watch, and that just hasn’t been Ohtani yet. Just like there are 90s basketball collectors who don’t go after Jordan but still love the era.

With that being said, I am also concerned about injury and I do think as time passes his production will slow a bit. One of these events may have his cards trend down slightly. If that happens then I will go after a bigger Ohtani. There is also a chance he wins three more mvps and three more championships and I miss the boat, and that’s okay because I love the cards of the players I collect.

I wanted to bump this thread to see if anyone on here has changed their mind about collecting Ohtani now after the amazing year he has had (will win another MVP) and has had some historic playoff games.

I mostly collect Aaron Judge and *sigh* Anthony Volpe, but I bought quite a bit of Ohtani cards over the summer. Can't deny he's a damn good player and hope for a healthy career.

TLDR-if i like a player, I never stop collecting them until some point where I move on to another or I have all I care to have.

This applies to all of my PC guys (Ohtani included) - when the RC or best cards move up in price, I migrate to the next year and on and on until I’m done collecting them. Back in 2021 when Shohei and many others were around peak prices, for example, I was outpriced on RCs so focused on unnumbered Ohtani 2019 chrome refractors, pink, sepia, etc for around $10 or Future Stars at $5 - they fortunately grade fairly well (if that’s your thing) so instead of one $2000 auto, I might have 100 $50 or $100 cards. I trend towards higher volume of lower end popular cards. I still like Ohtani’s ‘18 archives insert prices as those all seem to grade well.

I'm a Cubs fan and a Buccaneers fan. Probably the only person I collect outside of those teams is Julio Rodriguez. I did have a really nice Bobby Witt Jr. PC as well, but I rolled that into my PCA collection this year.

I have a few random Ohtani's here and there but haven't really collected much of him. I do collect a few active players, but he just never caught my eye. Fantastic player though. I will need to pick up an auto of his eventually since he's likely going to be a Hall of Famer.

Griffey was 30 when he joined the Reds and put up 5.5 WAR that year. I love me some Reds uniform Griffey.
