The problem is that gambling will churn people in and out of the hobby instead of keeping them around for a long time. The greed of these companies will produce amazing short term profits, but long-term, these companies will falter. The great thing is the majority of collectors that buy singles and stay away from the gambling, will still be around.

It’s fine that people are in and out, it’s still a way to get the attention of the masses, many will get curious and stay (at least keep some cards they enjoy). I have several wealthy friends that started with group breaks just for fun, after couple years of doing that they start to find the area of the hobby that interests them the most and they have formed some type of bucket list in their mind of the cards they want to own. Pulling people in “come and buy singles and collect them” is not gonna get them interested.

it´s true. the hobby needs these spectacular Sales and Ads and gambling chances to grow and became bigger BUT what we relly need is that a good % of this people will stay and began to build up wide and deep PC´s, so it will be sustainable.

when everything is on a rush in and out all the time. than scarcity dont become a point because everything is always available.
Cards need to desappear in PCs to become rare and sought after.

Hell, I don't think I have sold really anything in a year or so. Probably because I stopped buying speculative crap and just bought what I liked.

The "hobby" is not what people on here remember as the "hobby" of the pre 2010s and it's difficult for them to see it for what it is rather than how they want it to be

I get it, it's kind of like living and growing up in a sleepy mountain town that gets "discovered" by a bunch of rich tech bros and foreign investors and suddenly the mom and pop cafe you always went to after church on Sundays is torn down and replaced by some boutique coffee shop, strip malls, vacation condos, and suddenly your property taxes skyrocket and you can't afford to keep your family home. People are gonna struggle to accept that.

Same thing with folks who grew up remembering how nice it was to just walk into a card store, buy a box of Topps Finest or whatever and just rip it for the cost of a few weeks allowance and enjoy the cards. Suddenly you have all the brain rotted investerbros flooding cards just prior to Covid, sticking around until the floor fell out a couple years ago, and now its propped up by degen slot machine addicts joining breaks, breakers gobbling up all the stock they can and pushing prices for boxes to be based not on potential value of the cards inside, but based on the revenue one gains from selling slots in breaks.

I get the angst and the pining for what was. Obviously if you are Putin-wealthy like Khal is you don't care, but the poors with their base sets, pitchforks, and beds of hay to sleep on aren't gonna love it.

Yea and much like the normal economy the poors and their base sets don't matter to the card companies. They cater entirely to the degenerate gamblers and it certainly isn't changing anytime soon

What cards look attractive ...

Since before the season started, I've been picking up a Wemby here & there - nothing expensive, just your basic "poors" type low end RC's but in PSA 10. Am seeing some nice uptick in these.

And since I am Lakers fan, picked up a few nice mid-career Luka's in PSA 10 - I can see upside here if all goes well.

I nabbed a couple Stephon Castle's last year - tempted to send to PSA, but maybe hold off bit longer, see how he plays this season.

Baseball - I really like Tarik Skubal. Also picked up few Skenes. I'm a sucker for pitchers.

Market is collapsing today, so it’s over for cards. Fun while it lasted.

Buy low, sell high. Volatility is your friend. Keep some dry powder ready. Those famous investors say something about "... buy when blood in the streets". And perhaps above all - have patience, play the long term.

This made me chuckle.

Can't wait for Cramer or one of his fellow talking heads to recommend this!

Yeah, if influencers/upper crust wealthy paid more for cards where all sports players are turned into naked cabbage patch dolls laying in fields of lettuce that's what they'd do. I dont expect any profit-first companies to have much in the way of passion for anything other than money first. If the hobby makes them more and more money without having a healthy community, high quality art/designs, etc then they arent gonna GAF.

Look at Pokemon/Game Freak. Parents absolutely shell out for every new game, degens absolutely hoard new Pokemon sets and mud wrestle for spots in line outside of Target so they really have very little to gain by interesting game design, innovation, or any of that sort of thing. Just an unholy convergence of late stage capitalism, mental illness, and probably several other factors in consumer behavior.

You 100% can strong arm a company into changing as a consumer base, but it requires unity rarely seen. I do think there is still enough of a regular collector base to cause the bottom to fall out if they worked together but I don't think that's ever gonna happen. Always gonna be a bit of a prisoners dilemma were some individuals would jump right back in as soon as the market was appealing to them again.

I don't even know what any of this means. It is a strongly dressed word salad.

I just watched Packman open $30,000 worth of 4 absolute football cases to go Kaboom hunting. 4 cases of sports cards for over $30,000. That's where we're at, folks.
