Hopefully it's not the most common player the Reds get back in trades, a guy by the name of Cash Considerations.

So it's a 3 way trade?

A box of a balls is a overpay if the Red Sox take on any salary

Not a fan of this package for him. Fitts didn't really have a place in Boston but a big bummer to see Clarke go

Clarke is unhittable to many batters, but the strike zone is almost as unhittable for Clarke. Only at A+ at 22, the further he gets up the comp ladder the worse the walk rate is going to get. Not saying he isn't young enough to figure it out, but the list of pitchers that slay early control problems is much much smaller than the list of pitchers where the control problems win.

Boston gets a solid mid-rotation starter for a meh backend rotation/swing arm and a wild dart throw. I'd be happy if I were a Sox fan personally.

I think that's a rough take on a pitcher who yes has control issues but also shown some as you said unhittable stuff. I would classify him higher then a dart throw.

John Henry is trying to become the Boston A's...

I had to look up his numbers. He's been pretty good/durable the last 2 years. Not a terrible move I guess. Can never have enough SP depth, though this tells me they are not going to make a big FA SP splash.

This guy is still in baseball??

Seems like 15 years ago he was major suckage for the Yankees.

Good trade for both teams. Sonny Gray is a solid #3 still, potentially even a #2. His peripherals were much better than his ERA.

He had a weird year. He has like 25 starts where he pitched like a solid #2 and 5 starts where he gave up like 6 runs.

Glad to see the Cardinals are willing to buy prospects

Larry Rothschild was a disaster for Yankees pitchers. His Yankees tenure doesn't (shouldn't) represent his talent.

Gray is pretty solid starter. Can't turn out worse than Buehler.

Buehler was also an 21 Million Dollar mistake. Gray is just a possible 11 million one (plus the 5th starter and prospect) with the Cardinals taking on 20 million.

Red Sox are on the hook for at least $21 MM. To waive his no trade, they bumped his 26 pay to $31 MM (Cards eat $20 MM) and his 27 option is now a mutual option for $30 MM with a $10 MM buyout. Essentially Gray gets $1 MM extra to waive it but some deferred to 27.

Also, Gray is getting older, sure, but he’s been durable enough to strikeout 200+ hitters each of the last two seasons. (Only 4 other pitchers have done that)

On balance I think the Red Sox may have overpaid, but durable pitchers are at a premium. I just think Gray is essentially an Innings Eater at this stage.

Interesting did not see the mutual option portion. I would agree durable pitchers are at a premium and again agree with them overpaying, I do hope he is a step above a innings eater which I think he could be.

The AI written baseball spam headline called Sonny an “elite Strike thrower.” And as Skip mentioned, innings are challenging to fill these days.

Unlike the rare recent one Topps for one Topps trade (Semien/Nimmo), now we’re back to normal. One Topps for some Bowmans and a big ole pile of Benjamins.

And also as already mentioned by Stech, “buying prospects” is the way to look at this.

The result I expect from this is the AI generated trade speculations about Arenado will now double in frequency.

I agree with azw50 here. It wouldn't be totallly surprising if Fitts/Clarke ended up better this year. Even if everybody only hits their projections (ie no breakouts for the youngsters, Gray doesn't implode in his age 36 season), that is a lot to pay for someone who doesn't really move the needle in the postseason.
