Default List of ICONIC cards to have?

Anyone have a list to share, want to start creating one, etc?

For basketball and or even the other sports.

Examples that come to mind are Jordan 1993-94 Fleer Ultra Scoring Kings, 1989 Upper Deck Ken Griffey Jr, 1995 Pinnacle bubblegum card Ken Griffey Jr, 1989 Fleer Billy Ripken FF, etc.

Discuss and share.

Thanks much.

hmmmm I've seen threads like this before but I'll start with an obvious one, Wilt Chamberlain's 1961 Fleer Rookie card

Agreed! I'll add my 2004-05 Topps Chrome DJ Mbenga Gold Refractor RC /99 that isn't leaving my PC!

To answer OP's question, it just depends on the time period. I'm no expert (especially with pre 2000 stuff), but the categories in general would be:

Vintage through the 1980's (Star RC's) - Jordan 86 Fleer, Magic/Bird/Erving RC, Kareem RC, Mikan RC, Wilt RC, Russell RC, Jordan Star RC

90's Cards (Inserts/Parallels) - PMG, Metal Universe, Topps Chrome Kobe RC, SP Authentic Vince Carter, So many Inserts to choose from

2000's - 2015 time period: Kind of dead hobby period but lots of innovation in this time period (my favorite time period when I started collecting) - 2003 Topps Chrome Lebron, Topps Lebron RC, Exquisite Lebron, So many iconic Exquisite cards - Jordan/Lebron/Kobe - Limited Logos, Durant Topps Chrome RC, Topps Chrome Gold Ref's - Kobe, Lebron, Curry Topps/Topps Chrome RC, 12-13 Prizm Silvers of big names, 13-14 Prizm Giannis

2015 - Present: Somewhat lacking innovation imo but lots more to choose form, higher print runs. - Prizm RC's - Jokic, Luka, Wemby, etc, National Treasures of Top RC's, Kabooms/Downtowns, etc etc.

Very good list. And overlaps with some of mine, which lends validity to both our lists. I'd prob add - George Mikan RC, Kobe Topps Chrome RC, 2012-13 Prizm "something" (Kobe/Lebron/Curry), and maybe Kabooms/downtowns though ig for those there is not 1 specific card.

I used to think it was crazy how less than a handful of pure inserts even qualify as iconic. Then I realized how niche the hobby really is despite how these overseers hope & pray for it not to be the case.

I'd add the 96 Chrome Kobe. Greening issues aside, it's iconic.

Good list. Nothing too obscure. I hate it when collectors put obscure 1 or 1 cards on these lists. If a card is so rare that no one knows what it looks like, then it is probably not iconic.

There’s been so many threads on this with people continually refusing to acknowledge what iconic means.

The number of cards that Geoff Wilson calls iconic in his videos makes me think that he doesn't even know what the word means.

Yes, Kobe chrome is more iconic than Bron chrome.

Some version of 2012 Prizm LeBron James #1.

This is the first Prizm card ever made.

It's LeBron at his peak, pictured matching up against Kevin Durant during LeBron's 1st NBA Finals win.

"Iconic" describes something very famous, representative of a time, culture, or idea, and widely revered or symbolic, like Audrey Hepburn's style or the Statue of Liberty, embodying a larger concept through a powerful, recognizable image or person. It signifies cultural significance, often becoming an enduring symbol of quality, an era, or a core value, far beyond mere popularity.

Now, continue...
