Soto alone can’t carry the offense. Even if I were not a Mets fan, it doesn’t make sense. Alonso sells tickets and merch.

Boneheaded move.

He stinks? Wildly uneducated opinion. But that’s okay since it just means you weren’t paying attention to the Marlins last year, which is understandable. He struggled at times, as he was recovering from TJ, but finished the year strong.

As a Mets fan, these past few days have reminded me why I hate the fan base sometimes. Edwin is the only one I'm somewhat bummed about. I'm not going to miss Nimmo and Alonso that much.

I was exaggerating but I don’t he’s that good. Wouldn’t compare him to Alonso as far as jrx point.

I’m just a sad Marlins fan who would like to see them sign a star player to a second contract and maybe even finish their career as a Marlin (crazy talk, I know!)…

It’s a strange area for baseball. We have family in Naples and Hollywood. We also cruise out of Miami every couple years. Nothing about being down there screams “let’s go to a ballgame”.

I’m not overly familiar with that area. I haven’t been there much after my family moved away when I was 10, but I have been to the stadium once. It’s actually pretty nice. Small, simple, but well done. Even nothing is screaming at you to go, you should check it out anyways. Always great seats available.

We’ve been it’s nice. Coming from the northeast it’s crazy how cheap and easy to get good seats in most stadiums.

It's just my gut feeling -- I haven't read any reports on what it might have taken to re-sign him.
.

That can't be true, he wanted to be a Met, he expressed it numerous times and it just wasn't PR to say what the fans wanted to hear, if the Orioles offered 5 for 155 I can't imagine the same or slightly less wouldn't have got it done if the Mets offered it, they didn't offer him anything and the rumors if they did offer they weren't going to go more than 3 years for I am guessing around 30 million a year

This, just illogical, the amount of money this team is going to lose between the ticket sales and merchandise between his merchandise and the Mets merchandise in general is huge, fans are absolutely livid and unless this team shows some serious promise like 1st place or close to it in June I am guessing the fans are going to remain livid and not want to spend anything

I can't speak for Alonso and what his priorities were, but his agent is Scott Boras, who is well-known to pursue the highest dollar in free-agency. The Orioles' offer would have given Boras the leverage needed to extract more money out of the Mets. There is also the issue of the high income tax in New York, which would have needed to be offset to match the Orioles offer.

Maryland had a high income tax rate also, but also sounds like NYM were hesitant to extend to 5yr contract length. Time will tell.

If they want to move on from him that's fine. The problem I have is what is your plan moving forward without him to replace his production? It doesn't seem like they have one.

Also if they didn't think Alonso's production for 5 years wasn't worth it why do they feel like Soto's production for 15 years at $765M would be worth it? You give Soto the highest contract ever then after 1 season you decide to blow the team up? It doesn't make sense.

Soto is still only 27-years-old -- the Mets have plenty of time to rebuild around him. Alonso is 31-years-old and will need to shift over to DH in the coming years.

I agree, though, the Mets probably could have contended for a championship in 2026 with the same group of players if they had bolstered the rotation with an ace or two.

Soto needs to shift over to DH. He's one of if not the worst defensive RF in baseball.

I get the feeling the Mets GM wants to build a team his way, completely blow it up and build a young team how he wants it, I wouldn't be surprised if Lindor is traded, and I will bet the Soto contract was all on the Mets owner, he wanted him to appease the fans so he can get his casino built, I wouldn't be surprised if the Mets GM was opposed to that contract

Soto is a proven star, though. He had a career-high 43 home runs last season and was only 26-years-old. If he has to shift to DH to improve the team's defense, it still doesn't make his contract bad for the team. He's a cornerstone bat for any team looking to contend for a championship.
